UCO Spanks Tigers

ADA, Okla. (Dec. 30) – McKenzie Solberg missed just one shot in scoring 21 points and Marley Anderson had career highs for assists and rebounds in leading Central Oklahoma to a 78-47 shellacking of East Central here Wednesday afternoon.

It was the first game since Dec. 19 for the Bronchos, who drained 13-of-25 attempts (52.0 percent) from 3-point territory in the 31-point romp and improved to 9-2 in their final non-conference game of the season.  UCO shot a season-high 52.7 percent (29-of-55) overall.

"We had two good practices getting ready for today and I thought we played pretty well overall," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "Defensively we did some good things and obviously we shot the ball well, which makes the game a lot easier."

Solberg connected on 5-of-6 long-range offerings and made 8-of-9 shots overall in her 21-point outing while adding a career-high nine rebounds.  Anderson scored just three points, but dished out a career-best nine assists in addition to pulling down a career-high eight rebounds.

Bailey Taylor was 4-of-5 from beyond the arc in scoring 14 points and Blake Blessington added 10.  All 12 players who saw action scored at least two points.

The Bronchos limited ECU to 28.0-percent shooting (14-of-50) in their best defensive outing of the season.

UCO broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Tigers 21-8 in the frame behind Solberg's 13 points to grab a 38-19 halftime lead.

The senior sharpshooter nailed three 3-pointers in a six-minute span during the period, hitting one from the corner and two from the wing while adding a follow shot and a fast-break layup off a steal.

Blessington knocked down a long-range trey and a follow shot in a period-closing 10-0 run to give the Bronchos their commanding 19-point halftime advantage.

UCO had three turnovers and missed three straight shots to open the third quarter, but the Tigers shaved just four points off their deficit during that lull.  Haley Weathers finally ended the drought with a 3-pointer to spark an 8-0 run that pushed the lead to 22 (46-24) and ECU got no closer than 17 the rest of the game.

The Tigers hit a 3-pointer 30 seconds into the game to take the early lead, but UCO answered with seven straight points to go ahead 7-3.

Megan Womack started the run with a layup off a Solberg feed, Sadie Mason hit a turnaround jumper from in the lane and Julia Mason made one of two free throws before ending the spurt with a 10-foot bank shot off an inbounds pass from Anderson.

ECU came back to tie it 7-7 and it was deadlocked again 9-9 before the Bronchos went ahead to stay on two Blessington free throws at the 1:52 mark.  The rookie knocked down a corner trey 30 seconds later and Anderson followed a Tiger basket with a 3-pointer from the wing to give UCO a 17-11 lead after the opening period.

The Bronchos return to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play Saturday, traveling to Maryville, Mo. to play Northwest Missouri at 1:30 p.m.
