Shockers Rally Past UCO In Exhibition

WICHITA, Kan. (Nov. 8) – A rough finish ruined Central Oklahoma's inspired upset bid as Wichita State ended the game with a 13-2 run to turn back the Bronchos 68-61 in exhibition action here Sunday afternoon.

UCO led the majority of the game and was up 59-55 with 4:59 left before scoring only two points in their final nine possessions.  The Bronchos had five turnovers and made only 1-of-4 shots during that stretch.

"It was a great learning experience for us and will help make us better," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "I thought we played really well for stretches, but obviously we made too many mistakes at the end and that cost us."

UCO led 51-47 entering the final quarter and was still up four at 59-55 when Julia Mason made two free throws at the 4:56 mark.  The Shockers scored four quick points to tie it at 59 before McKenzie Solberg scored inside off a nice J. Mason pass to give the Bronchos their final lead at 61-59 with 3:41 left.

That would be the last points for UCO, which had three turnovers and three misses shots the rest of the way as WSU scored the game's final nine points.

Solberg led the Bronchos with 19 points and seven rebounds, hitting 7-of-14 shots and 5-of-6 free throws.  Taylor Bailey was the only other one in double figures with 12 on 5-of-9 shooting with UCO's only two 3-pointers.

UCO missed five of its first six shots in falling behind 7-3 early, but rebounded with a 16-6 run to take a six-point lead.

Solberg had nine of those points with a trio of driving layups and three free throws after getting hammered on a 3-point shot, with Taylor's 12-foot baseline jumper putting the Bronchos on top 19-13 late in the opening period.

The Shockers scored the final five points of the quarter to get within 19-18 and it was still a one-point lead at 27-26 midway through the second when back-to-back layups by Megan Womack and Marley Anderson gave UCO a 31-26 advantage.

Three straight turnovers helped WSU go on a 7-0 run to move in front 33-31 before Sadie Mason's follow shot just before the halftime buzzer created a 33-all stalemate.

J. Mason's layup to open the third period put the Bronchos back on the top and the lead was back to six at 44-38 after Solberg converted a three-point play

Bailey's driving layup made it 48-41 with 2:51 left in the quarter and it was still a seven-point advantage (51-44) at 1:34 when Bailey drilled a 3-pointer from the wing, UCO's first of the game.

The Bronchos then went six straight possessions without scoring, missing four shots and committing two turnovers, as WSU scored seven unanswered points to tie it at 51 early in the final stanza.

UCO opens the season Friday at the MIAA/GAC Challenge in Alva, Okla., taking on Southeastern Oklahoma Friday and Northwestern Oklahoma Saturday.
