UCO Surges Past Savage Storm

ALVA, Okla. (Nov. 13) – McKenzie Solberg and Haley Weathers combined for 23 of their 29 points in the second half to spark Central Oklahoma to a season-opening 68-57 triumph over Southeastern Oklahoma here Friday night the MIAA/GAC Challenge.

The Bronchos trailed by as many as 12 in the first half and were down 30-26 at the break before surging in front in the third quarter and then taking control in the final seven minutes of the final period.

Solberg scored 12 of her game-high 17 points and Weathers 11 of her 14 in the final two quarters for UCO, which avenged a 69-66 loss to the Savage Storm in last year's season-opener.

"We got off to a slow start, but didn't panic and did a good job getting back in the game," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "We played pretty well at times and got contributions from a lot of different players, which was good to see."

The Bronchos took a 43-41 lead into the 10-minute fourth period and it was tied at 43, 46 and 48 before UCO went ahead to stay at 50-48 on Jordan Ward's driving layup with 6:33 remaining.

Weathers followed an SOSU turnover with a 3-pointer off a Ward assist, with Solberg and Ward converted two more turnovers into fast-break layups and a 57-48 lead at the 4:55 mark.

It was a 10-point cushion at 61-51 with 3:41 left after another Solberg layup and the Savage Storm got no closer than eight the rest of the way.

UCO trailed 19-11 after the first period and was down 12 (26-14) four minutes into the second before ripping off 10 straight points to get back in the game.

Weathers and Bailey Taylor drilled 3-pointers and Sadie Mason scored four points during that run that made it 26-24 and the game was close the rest of the way until the Bronchos pulled away at the end.

UCO takes on host Northwestern Oklahoma at 8 p.m. Saturday.
