Fast Start Fuels Unbeaten Bronchos

EDMOND (Nov. 30) – Three different players scored in a game-opening 8-0 run that gave Central Oklahoma a lead it never relinquished and the unbeaten Bronchos cruised past Mid-America Christian 82-69 Monday night at Hamilton Field House.

Julia Mason had two layups while Sadie Mason and McKenzie Solberg both scored from close range in the early surge for UCO, which was never threatened after turning a two-point first-quarter lead into a 13-point halftime cushion.

The Bronchos led by as many as 26 in the final two periods and improved to 4-0 in their home debut.  UCO starts a four-game Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association road swing Thursday at Missouri Southern.

"It was a sloppy game and we made way too many mistakes," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "Obviously we're happy with the win, but I wasn't very pleased with the way we played defensively."

Twelve of UCO's 13 players scored in the contest and the Bronchos had 23 assists on 36 made buckets while outscoring MACU 44-26 in the paint.

Haley Weathers led the way with 19 points, hitting 8-of-11 shots and all three 3-point attempts.  Solberg finished with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists.

UCO also got eight points each from S. Mason and Olivia Mason, while Marley Anderson chipped in seven points, a career-high seven assists and three steals.

The Evangels rebounded from UCO's early spurt to close within 10-9 and the lead was just 15-13 after the first 10-minute period.

O. Mason started the second period with two 3-pointers in a 24-second span and Megan Womack followed with a short jumper to extend the lead to 23-13, with Weathers' last-second layup giving the Bronchos a 40-27 halftime advantage.

The lead grew to 22 (65-43) by the end of the third quarter and it was a 26-point cushion at 73-47 following Madison Lee's 10-footer at the 6:25 mark before MACU ended the game with a 22-9 run to get within the final margin.
