Solberg Saves Bronchos

ALVA, Okla. (Nov. 14) – McKenzie Solberg scored 14 of her career-high 36 points in the fourth quarter to propel Central Oklahoma to a 72-65 come-from-behind victory over Northwestern Oklahoma here Saturday night on the second day of the MIAA/GAC Challenge.

The Rangers had a nine-point advantage at 57-48 early in the final stanza before Solberg had eight points in a 16-2 run that gave the Bronchos a 63-59 lead with 2:50 left and UCO closed out the win to complete a sweep of the season-opening weekend classic.

Solberg made 10-of-13 shots with a pair of 3-pointers and 14-of-16 free throws in a 36-point outing that ranks as the second-best in school history while adding seven rebounds and five steals.

"McKenzie really carried us tonight," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "She worked really hard in the off-season to get ready and it shows.  We did a great job coming back at the end and got out of here with a good win."

Freshman Sadie Mason was big off the bench for the Bronchos with 17 points, six rebounds and two blocks while hitting 7-of-12 shots.

UCO shot just 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from 3-point range, but forced 24 turnovers while making 14 steals.

The Broncos trailed 50-48 entering the final period and NWOSU scored the first seven points of the stanza to take a 57-48 lead before UCO mounted its comeback.

Solberg started the rally with a layup and added six free throws, while S. Mason, Julia Mason, Haley Weathers and Marley Anderson also scored as the Bronchos surged in front 63-59 by the 2:50 mark.

It was a three-point lead at 65-62 with 1:05 left after an NWOSU free throw, but J. Mason hit a 3-pointer at 0:44 and Solberg scored four straight points to push the lead to 72-62 before the Rangers hit a last-second 3-pointer.

The Bronchos led 15-8 after one period before NWOSU came back to take a 29-27 lead by intermission.

UCO goes to near-by Oklahoma Christian Tuesday, with game-time set for 5:30 p.m.
