EDMOND (April 21) -- Former Central Oklahoma athletic director and coach Charlie Murdock died Friday at the age of 81 after a lengthy illness.
Murdock served as athletic director from 1976-86, with the Bronchos winning an NAIA national football championship, six NAIA national wrestling crowns and numerous NAIA District 9 titles in various sports during his tenure.
A member of the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame, Murdock was an all-conference running back for the Bronchos in 1954. He returned to UCO as an assistant football coach in 1962, helping the team win the NAIA national title that season, and was a member of the football staff until 1967.
Murdock also served as golf, tennis and track and field coach for the Bronchos, earning District 9 Coach of the Year honors twice in track.
A memorial service for Murdock will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Henderson Hills Baptist Church, 1200 E. I-35 Frontage Road, in Edmond.
