Bearcats Hand UCO First MIAA Setback

BOLIVAR, Mo. (Dec. 8) –
Central Oklahoma overcame a 14-point second-half deficit, but  Southwest Baptist prevailed in the end to hand the Bronchos a 75-71 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association setback here Saturday night.
 
UCO had a six-game winning streak snapped with the close loss, falling to 6-2 on the year and 1-1 in league play while playing their eighth road game in nine outings.
 
The Bronchos took a 54-53 lead with 9:13 left to play after trailing 47-33 just eight minutes earlier, but the Bearcats surged back in front by eight (73-65) with 3:11 remaining before UCO rallied again to get close.
 
Chelsea Robinson's 3-point at the 2:57 mark got the Bronchos within five and it was a 73-70 deficit when Jill Bryan hit a short jumper with 1:16 to play.  SBU missed a shot and two free throws to keep UCO alive and Britney Morgan made it 73-71 when she hit one of two foul shots at 0:08.
 
SBU rebounded Morgan's second miss and the Bronchos were forced to foul, with the Bearcats hitting two free throws with six seconds left to seal the win.
 
Bryan led UCO, hitting 7-of-13 shots with three 3-pointers in a season-high 21-point outing.  Savannah Hamilton added 16 points and a team-high six rebounds, while Alyssa Fuxa finished with 12 points and Morgan with 11 points and five assists.
 
The Bronchos were outrebounded 49-32 in the contest and SBU pulled down 16 boards on the offensive end.
 
UCO led only once in the first half, that at 2-0 on a Fuxa layup just 11 seconds into the game.   The Bearcats used a 10-2 run to go on top 10-4 and led by as many as 12 before settling for a 40-29 halftime advantage.
 
The Bronchos were down 14 (47-33) at the 17-minute mark before getting back in the contest with an 11-0 spurt as Morgan had five points and Bryan four.  UCO took its first lead since the opening seconds on Bryan's jumper that made it 54-53 with 9:13 left and it was tied at 56 after Fuxa's bucket at 7:55 before SBU moved in front to stay.
 
Central is off until hosting Midwestern State on Jan. 19.
