HOUSTON, Texas (March 14) -- Dustin Finn fell short in his bid to become Central Oklahoma's first-ever heavyweight national champion and the Bronchos finished sixth in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships that concluded here Saturday night.
Finn dropped a 6-4 finals decision to Newberry's Cy Wainwright, losing to an unbeaten wrestler in the championship match for the second straight year. The Bronchos finished with five All-Americans -- the 26th consecutive year with at least four -- and ended the tournament with 60.5 points.
UCO also got fourth-place finishes from 125-pounder Tim Elliott and 174-pounder Tommy McCarty, while Luke Elmore came in fifth at 149 and Scott Berens eighth at 133.
Top-rated Nebraska-Omaha piled up 146.5 points to run away with the title, followed by Newberry (80.5), Minnesota State-Mankto (71.5), Nebraska-Kearney (65), Adams State (62) and the Bronchos.
“I'm disappointed for Dustin,” said UCO coach David James of the Moore junior. “It's tough to get that close to a championship and not get it, but he lost to a good kid and thankfully has another year to go."
Wainwright had two first-period takedowns in taking a 4-1 lead over Finn in the finals, with Finn getting an escape and takedown midway through the final period to make it 4-3. Wainwright escaped seconds later and tacked on a riding time point to cap his 36-0 season and end Finn's at 26-4.
Finn, who lost to UNK's Tervel Dlagnev 4-1 in last year's finals, made the finals with a 3-1 sudden-victory decision over Western State's Charlie Alexander in the semifinals. The two big men traded escapes in regulation before Finn got a takedown with 17 seconds left in the one-minute sudden-victory period to claim the 3-1 win.
