GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Jan. 3) -- Falls by Kelly Henderson and Tommy McCarty fueled a Central Oklahoma comeback that carried the Bronchos past Wisconsin-Stevens Point 26-16 here Saturday night at the Lone Star Duals.
UCO went 3-1 in the all-day event and won six of the final eight weights to overcome an early 7-0 deficit against the Pointers, ranked 11th in NCAA Division III.
Henderson and McCarty had the two biggest wins for the Division II No. 6-rated Bronchos as each scored a first-period pin, with McCarty's fall at 174 pounds breaking a 13-13 deadlock and putting UCO in front to stay.
“It was a long day and we saw a lot of things, both good and bad,” UCO coach David James said. “We had a few guys come through with some big bonus wins that we needed, but we also had some matches where we didn't compete like we should have.
“We've just got to keep moving forward and working hard at getting better.”
The Bronchos lost the first two weights to fall into a 7-0 hole, but then won the next three bouts to surge in front.
Colby Robinson started the streak with a methodical 5-0 shutout at 141, Luke Elmore followed with a 10-2 major decision at 149 and Henderson ended it with his third first-period fall of the day -- this one in 1:41 -- to give UCO a 13-7 lead.
The Pointers tied it with a fall at 165, but McCarty quickly broke that stalemate with a 55-second pin that put the Bronchos on top 19-7. A 7-6 win by 184 Daniel Morrison and 13-5 major decision by 197 Zach James gave UCO a 26-13 lead and clinched the win.
The Bronchos, now 5-2 on the season, return to action next weekend at the NWCA Division II National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
