CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (Jan. 10) -- No. 3-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato scored falls in the final three weights to break open a close match and claim a 27-14 win over No. 5 Central Oklahoma here Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the NWCA/Cliff Keen Division II National Duals.
Tommy McCarty's 14-9 win at 174 pounds gave the Bronchos a 14-9 lead, but the Mavericks finished with a flourish in scoring three straight pins to claim the victory and advance to Sunday's 11 a.m. quarterfinals.
The Bronchos fell into a 5 p.m. consolation match against Pittsburgh-Johnstown.
UCO took an early 7-0 lead as Tim Elliott opened the dual with an 11-1 major decision and Scott Berens followed with a 5-0 shutout, but the Mavericks pulled out overtime wins at 141 and 149 before winning a third straight at 157 to move in front 9-7.
The Bronchos got a 20-8 major decision from 165 Mikey Morgan and Tommy McCarty won 8-5 at 174 to make it 14-9.
But MSU-Mankato dominated the rest of the way, tying it with a fall at 184 and then taking the lead with another pin at 197 before finishing it off with another fall in the final match at heavyweight.
