UCO Drops MIAA Opener At Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma lost its MIAA opener at Washburn 14-10 on Saturday afternoon at Yager Stadium.
 
The Bronchos are now 1-2 on the season overall and 0-1 in the MIAA.
 
"Today was disappointing because we had so many self-inflicted problems," UCO head football coach Adam Dorrel said. "We emphasized ball control and we didn't win the turnover battle. We had bad penalties and busts that you can't afford to do. Our defense played way to good to lose this game, so it's disappointing."
 
Central Oklahoma held Washburn to 202 total yards of offense, 101 rushing and 101 passing. The Bronchos forced two turnovers, recovering a fumble and nabbing one interception. UCO also forced six Washburn punts. But the Bronchos couldn't get the offense going in the loss.
 
Central had 359 total yards of offense, with 271 through the air and 88 on the ground. But the Bronchos fumbled five times, lost three of those, and threw one interception.
 
Despite all of that, UCO had a chance to win the game. The Bronchos started their final drive on the Washburn 20-yard line with 1:30 to play and moved all the way to midfield in the first 30 seconds. But on 2nd & 4 from the UCO 49, Jett Huff threw an interception and Washburn knelt down to end the game.
 
Huff was 27-for-42 with 271 yards passing and the one interception. He was also Central's leading rusher with 46 yards on 14 carries and UCO's only touchdown.
 
Tahkari Bethel led the team with 99 receiving yards on seven catches. Makel Paiva had 56 yards on five catches and Zayden Martinez added 47 yards on three receptions. Ja'Daniel Nettles, who had 33 rushing yards on eight carries, had five receptions for 29 yards.
 
Reese Roller led the defensive effort for Central Oklahoma with a career-high 14 tackles. The senior linebacker had three tackles in the backfield and one pass breakup. Christian Cooper added eight tackles. Chris Fitzpatrick had five with two in the backfield and a forced fumble.
 
Central Oklahoma will make its home debut next Saturday, Sept. 26 against Northwest Missouri. It's Homecoming Week for UCO as the Bronchos open the gates at Chad Richison Stadium for the first time in 2026.
