UCO Grounds Jets With Doubleheader Sweep

No. 18 Bronchos clobber Newman 14-0 and 5-0 in Home Finale

EDMOND – Shelby Beard and Carleigh Kinnaird threw back-to-back shutouts, Rylee Lemos closed her home career with a dominating performance at the plate and Central Oklahoma swept past Newman Friday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Beard and Kinnaird gave up a combined four hits in the doubleheader while Lemos went 5-for-8 with two home runs, six runs batted in and four runs scored as the No. 18-ranked Bronchos collected 21 hits in hammering the Jets 14-0 and 5-0.

UCO finished the regular season 41-12 overall and 17-6 in the conference in reaching the 40-win mark for the 13th time in school history, including the fifth straight. The Bronchos travel to Emporia, Kansas next week for the MIAA Championship, with that bracket set to be released Saturday night.

"What a great way to finish out the regular season with an offensive attack and two shutouts from our pitching," head coach Sam Maples said. "It was great to honor our seniors and we continue to see their leadership in so many ways. I'm really proud of our team."

UCO smacked five homers in the first-game shellacking and then honored its four seniors – Lemos, Rylee AnglenKennedy Clark and Sherri Mason – before Kinnaird tossed a one-hit gem in the nightcap.

The Bronchos banged out 13 hits in the opener, with Anglen going 3-for-3 with three runs to lead the way. Lemos and Brooklyn Lyles both had two-homer, four-RBI outings while Haley Gallo also had two hits.

Central got the offensive onslaught started in the second with a five-run outburst.

Jenna Jobe led off with a single to right, Hannah Demoff reached on a hit that ricocheted off the pitcher's foot and Lyles followed with a first-pitch, no-doubt big fly over the left field wall. Anglen kept the inning going with a bunt single and eventually scored on an error while Gallo added an RBI single to make it 5-0.

The Bronchos used a two-out rally to expand the lead to 8-0 in the third.

Mason drew a two-out walk to start things and then stole second before scoring on Anglen's single to right field. Lemos stepped in next and smashed a long line drive to right-center field for her 30th career homer.

UCO really blew it open in the fourth, scoring six times behind a three-homer assault.

Gallo led off the inning with a double and pinch-hitter McKenzie Niehus followed with her first career homer, this one a drive to left field that bounced off the top of the wall before going over. Lyles made it two long balls in a row with a solo shot to left center for her fifth homer of the season.

Anglen chipped in another RBI single and Lemos collected her 11th homer of the year with a two-run blast that went high over the fence in left-center to make it 14-0.

Beard then put the Jets down in order in the bottom of the inning to finish off the rout to earn her fourth shutout of the season. The junior right-hander gave up three hits and one walk while striking out two in improving to 20-6.

Kinnaird took the circle next and was never threatened in picking up her third shutout and 10th complete game. The freshman righty allowed just one hit - that a leadoff single in the fifth - while walking two and striking out five in moving to 17-4 on the season.

Lemos went 3-for-4 with Gallo and Mason adding two hits apiece to lead the offense.

UCO scored the only run it would need in the third when Ryan reached on a fielder's choice, went to third on Gallo's double and trotted home on Clark's sacrifice fly.

Ryan made it 2-0 in the fifth, following Lemos' leadoff triple to center fielder with an RBI single through the left side and the Bronchos put it away with a three-run volley in the sixth.

Lyles reached on a one-out walk to get things going, Mason singled to left and Anglen walked to load the bases for Lemos. The senior standout capped her big day with a two-run single to right and Ryan added an RBI groundout to make it 5-0 and end any doubt to the outcome.
