Bronchos Take Two From Northwest Missouri

No. 18 UCO Earns 5-2 and 8-3 Wins in MIAA Doubleheader

EDMOND – Jenna Jobe slugged two home runs, Kennedy Clark had a four-RBI day and Central Oklahoma toppled Northwest Missouri twice in a wind-blown doubleheader Friday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

The No. 18-ranked Bronchos prevailed 5-2 in the first game as Jobe – who entered the day with one homer on the season – belted two bombs and UCO rallied for an 8-3 victory in the nightcap behind a pair of key two-out RBI hits from Clark.

Shelby Beard and Carleigh Kinnaird had back-to-back complete-game pitching outings for the Bronchos, who improved to 29-8 overall and 7-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

"I'm so proud of these wins today," said head coach Sam Maples, whose team hosts Missouri Western for a 1 p.m. twinbill Saturday. "I especially loved the adjustment our hitters made in game two. We pitched it well against a very well-coached Northwest Missouri team."

UCO jumped on top quickly in the opener after loading the bases with no outs on walks to Rylee Lemos and Haley Gallo sandwiched around Brooklyn Ryan's bunt single. Clark followed with a line-drive single to right-center field that scored two runs to put the Bronchos ahead to stay.

It became a 3-0 lead in the second when Rylee Anglen walked, stole second, went to third on a ground out and jogged home on Gallo's two-out double to right-center.

The Bearcats took advantage of a rare UCO error to score two runs in the top of the third to make it 3-2, but Beard closed the door after that.

Jobe added two insurance runs the rest of the way with her homers. The sophomore slugger hammered a full-count pitch over the left field wall to lead off the third, then hit a line shot that barely cleared the fence in right-center in the fifth.

Beard gave up four hits in her 10th complete game performance of the season. The junior right-hander struck out six and walked two in improving to 14-4.

UCO trailed 2-0 after three innings in the second game and didn't collect its first hit until Ryan led off the fourth with a single up the middle. She stayed at first after two quick outs and then was ruled out on a stolen base attempt that would have ended the inning, but Maples asked for a video review and the call was reversed.

That turned the game around.

Jobe was hit by pitch to put runners first and second for Hannah Demoff, who drove the first pitch she saw up the middle for an RBI single. Brooklyn Lyles' single to left loaded the bases and a throwing error allowed two runs to score to give the Bronchos a 3-2 lead.

UCO kept the bats going in the fifth to break the game open.

Lemos led off with a single to center field and ended up scoring on Clark's two-out bloop single to left. Three straight RBI hits followed as Jobe doubled off the left field wall, Demoff tripled to right field and Lyles singled to center.

That made it 7-2 and the outcome was all but decided.

The Bearcats tallied an unearned run in the sixth, but UCO answered in the bottom of the frame on Clark's two-out RBI single. Kinnaird put NWMSU down in order in the seventh to finish off the sweep.

Clark, Demoff and Lyles had two hits apiece to lead a nine-hit attack.

Kinnaird improved to 14-2 with her eighth complete game. The freshman right-hander scattered eights while fanning six and walking two.
