Bronchos Split League Doubleheader With Emporia

EDMOND – An early scoring outburst led to a runaway rout and a late rally fell short as Central Oklahoma split a MIAA doubleheader with Emporia State Friday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Rylee Lemos blasted a grand slam to key an eight-run uprising in the first inning of the opener and the No. 18-ranked Bronchos coasted 9-0 before falling 3-2 in the nightcap after a final-inning comeback try fizzled.

UCO is now 33-10 on the season and 10-4 in league play. The Bronchos are back home Tuesday to host No. 12 Oklahoma Christian for a 5 p.m. single game.

Shelby Beard gave up just two hits in the five-inning opener while striking out two and walking three. It was the 11th complete game and third shutout of the season for the junior right-hander, who improved to 17-5.

The Bronchos needed just seven hits to score their nine runs, getting two apiece from Jenna Jobe and Brooklyn Lyles

UCO took command of the contest in their initial bat, scoring all eight of its runs with two outs behind four hits, three walks and two hit batters.

The Bronchos loaded the bases with no outs before a double play threatened to extinguish the prime scoring opportunity. Jobe kept the inning going with an infield single that scored Brooklyn Ryan, who had reached on a double, and Hannah Demoff walked to once again load the bases.

Lyles came laced a two-run single through the left side, Sherri Mason drew another walk and Rylee Anglen was hit by pitch to force in a run. Lemos then followed with a towering shot over the scoreboard in left-center field for the grand slam that made it 8-0.

It was the 28th career homer for Lemos, moving her into 10th place on UCO's all-time list.

The Bronchos made it 9-0 in the second when Gallo roped a leadoff double to center field, went to third on a ground out and scored on Jobe's single.

Central got key defensive plays from Mason at third base, Anglen at second and Kennedy Clark at first in securing its seventh shutout of the season.

The Bronchos take a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap on Ryan's double off the center field fence that scored Lemos, who led off with a single to right.

Anglen and Demoff at shortstop had highlight-reel defensive plays in the third to keep UCO in front, but the Hornets drew even in the fourth and took a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh with a pair of unearned runs.

The Bronchos mounted a last-ditch rally in their final at bat that fell just short.

Anglen kept UCO alive after two quick outs with a bunt single and Lemos followed with a base hit to right. Ryan then delivered an RBI single up the middle to make it 3-2, but Emporia made a pitching change and got the final out to snuff the comeback.

Ryan went 3-for-4 to lead a 10-hit attack, while Lemos and Jobe had two hits each.

Kinnaird allowed just five hits while striking out five and walking four. The freshman fell to 14-3 on the season.
