Bronchos Sweep Washburn to Open League Play

No. 17-ranked UCO Earned Two Shutouts, Winning 8-0 and 4-0

EDMOND – Stout pitching, flawless defense and timely hitting resulted in a MIAA doubleheader sweep for Central Oklahoma Friday afternoon at sweltering Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Shelby Beard and Carleigh Kinnaird allowed a combined five hits in throwing consecutive complete-game shutouts and the No. 17-ranked Bronchos produced several key plays in the field while not committing an error in claiming 8-0 and 4-0 wins.

Haley Gallo, Sherri Mason and Rylee Anglen had two-run hits in the first-game rout that ended after five innings on the eight-run rule, with Gallo's three-run home run the big blow in the nightcap.

UCO improved to 24-5 with the sweep. The Bronchos have won 14 of their last 15 games, including six straight, heading into Saturday's noon league doubleheader with Central Missouri.

UCO broke a scoreless tie in the third inning of the opener with a pair of runs. Mason led off with an infield single, went to second on Anglen's sacrifice and took third on a groundout before Brooklyn Ryan walked.

Ryan promptly stole second and Gallo laced a double to center field to plate both runners for a 2-0 lead.

The Bronchos broke the game open in the fourth with a five-run volley.

Jenna Jobe opened the inning with a bloop double to left, Hannah Demoff singled to right and Brooklyn Lyles walked to load the bases with no outs. Mason ripped a two-run single up the middle to get the scoring going, Anglen followed with a two-RBI triple to left and Rylee Lemos completed the onslaught with a sacrifice fly.

UCO then ended the game in the bottom of the fifth when Anglen drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the run that made it 8-0.

Shelby Beard was nearly untouchable in the contest, needing just 57 pitches in improving to 12-3 with her 30th career win. The junior right-hander gave up just two hits while walking one and striking out one.

Mason had two of UCO's seven hits and Anglen finished with three RBI.

Infielders Anglen (second base), Demoff (shortstop) and Mason (third base) led the defensive efforts in the opener and they repeated that in the second with a series of big plays.

Washburn had runners at second and third with no outs in the top of the first after a pair of walks and stolen bases, but the Bronchos kept them off the scoreboard. Mason stopped a hard-hit grounder to get the first out before a couple of harmless fly outs ended the threat.

UCO responded to that stop in its first at bat to take quick control of the game.

Lemos led off with a double off the left field walk, Ryan singled through the left side and Gallo made it 3-0 with a massive blast that bounced off the top of the scoreboard in left-center field for her eighth homer of the season.

The Bronchos added an insurance run in the fourth. Mason reached on an error to start things, moved to second on Anglen's sacrifice bunt and raced home on Lemos' single to right to make it 4-0.

The Ichabods looked to get back in the game with one out in the top of the fifth after loading the bases with their first two hits of the game and a walk. But UCO maintained the shutout as Mason snared a scorcher at third to get the second out at home and Kinnnard ended the inning with a strikeout.

WU put its lead runner on in the sixth before Anglen started a double play with an unassisted putout and easy flip to first followed by another groundout to Mason.

Kinnaird was a workhorse in the circle on a brutally hot afternoon, throwing 116 pitches. The rookie right-hander allowed just three hits while walking three and striking out two in moving to 11-1 on the season.

Lemos went 3-for-3 at the plate and Demoff added two hits to pace the offense.
