Central Oklahoma Ousted In MIAA Quarterfinals

Bronchos Lose 3-0 To Emporia State, Wait On NCAA Fate

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma lost 3-0 to Emporia State in the MIAA Women's Soccer Championship quarterfinals Sunday in Edmond.

The Bronchos are now 10-6-3 overall on the season and will play an uneasy waiting game ahead of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship selection show next week.

"We had early chances that just missed and we really needed those today," UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "We let one get away with the penalty and then just lost control in the end. Now we wait and see and hope for the best."

Central Oklahoma was ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Power Index for the Central Region. The top eight teams qualify for the national tournament. Three conference champions and five at-large bids will be selected. UCO will learn its fate Nov. 9 when the field is announced.

Sunday, the Bronchos were outshot by Emporia 10-4 in the first half but it was still tied 0-0. In the 70th minute, a foul on Kaitlyn Cotton in the box gave ESU a penalty. UCO goalkeeper Maddie Ortwein saved the PK, but the rebound went right to the ESU player, who put home the rebound for a 1-0 lead.

Just four minutes later, ESU found the back of the net again to make it 2-0. In the 90th minute, while running out the clock, the Hornets made a turn toward the goal and scored with 29 seconds remaining to make it the final, 3-0.

ESU outshot UCO 15-11 in the game and held a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Bronchos were also on the wrong side of 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Ortwein played the full 90 in goal and made four saves.
