Central Oklahoma Stumbles At Pitt State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – A hot start cooled quickly and Central Oklahoma never recovered from Pittsburg State's counterattack as the Bronchos lost 52-14 Saturday afternoon.

Central Oklahoma dropped to 3-5 on the season with the loss and is now 2-4 in the MIAA.

The Bronchos started the game on defense and forced a three & out. Then true freshman Cruz Campbell took the team down the field for a quick scoring drive. Ja'Daniel Nettles capped off the 8-play, 69-yard scoring drive with an eight-yard touchdown run to give the Bronchos a 7-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the Bronchos the lead disappeared. Pitt State tied the game early in the second quarter to tie the game, 7-7, then put two more in the end zone to take a 21-7 lead before halftime.

An early blitz in the third quarter made it worse for the Bronchos. UCO went three & out and Pitt went down the field to score and go up 28-7. The ensuing kickoff was not fielded by the Bronchos and Pitt recovered, then scored again. It was 35-7 with 9:19 to play in the third quarter.

Owen Jones made his UCO debut in the second half and threw his first career touchdown pass on a 30-yard strike to Andrew Carney that made it 35-14 with 7:25 to play in the third quarter. Pitt added a field goal and pair of scores in the fourth quarter to make it the final, 52-14.

UCO finished the game with 314 total yards of offense. The Bronchos passed for 210 with Campbell throwing 139 yards and Jones throwing 71 yards. Central had 104 rushing yards.

Cameron Done, Bryant Coley, and Reese Roller led the Bronchos with eight tackles each.

UCO will return home next weekend for a matchup against Nebraska Kearney. The annual Hall of Fame Game is scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m.
