UCO Season Ends In Regional

Central Oklahoma Loses 5-1 To Nebraska Kearney In NCAA Division Women's Tennis Championship Central Regional

TOPEKA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma's season came to an end in the first round of the NCAA Central Region Championships Monday with a 5-1 loss to Nebraska Kearney.
 
UCO finished its season 13-7, earning a trip back to the national tournament after missing last season. The Bronchos were the No. 6 seed in the six-team regional, UNK the No. 3 seed. Monday marked the third meeting between the two programs in the last three weeks. Kearney won in Edmond before UCO won in Springfield, Missouri at the MIAA Women's Tennis Championship semifinals.
 
Monday, UNK took the doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles. Karyna Yurchenko and Hui Soo lost 6-2 at No. 3 before Anika Ouwejan and Nefeli Zafeiri lost 6-4 at the No. 1 position. Pete Komada and Ayaka Koga were tied 4-4 at No. 2 doubles when the point was clinched.
 
In singles play, Ouwejan lost 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and Zafeiri lost 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles to put UCO behind 3-0 and on the verge of defeat.
 
Soo won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 singles to get UCO on the board, but the clinching point was coming. Yurchenko lost 7-5, 7-5 at No. 5 and Koga lost 7-5, 4-6, 0-6 at No. 3 singles. With both matches ending at the same time, both points counted to make it 5-1.
 
Komada won her first set 7-5 and was down 6-5 in the second when her match was abandoned.
