UCO Gets Three Upset Wins In Narrow Loss To Kearney

Bronchos Win Three Singles Matches Against Ranked Opponents Saturday In Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma had a trio of upsets in a tight battle with Nebraska Kearney Saturday morning but ended the day on the wrong side of a 4-3 decision.

UCO is 5-6 on the season following the MIAA loss. The Bronchos are 1-2 in league play. Saturday's dual was a matchup of nationally rated teams. The Bronchos were 42nd in this week's ITA Top 50 and Nebraska Kearney was 28th in that poll. The contest included four singles and two doubles that were nationally ranked as well.

Saturday, Kearney took a 1-0 lead winning two of three doubles matches. Karyna Yurchenko and Anika Ouwejan won 6-3 at No. 3 doubles, but UNK got 6-2 wins at the other two positions to take the early point. Blythe Buntrock and Pete Komada, ranked 24th in the country, lost at No. 1, and Nefeli Zafeiri and Ayaka Koga lost to 50th-ranked Melisa Becerra and Narindra Ranaivo at No. 3 doubles.

After the break, the 66th-ranked Komada quickly leveled the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles over UNK's 75th-ranked Becerra. Kearney got back on top, 2-1, with a win at No. 3 singles over Buntrock, 6-3, 6-2.

UNK clinched the match with two more wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Ouwejan fell in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 2-6. Koga fell 3-6, 6-7 (1-7) in straight sets.

Zafeiri and Yurchenko got UCO two more points and both did it with big three-set upset wins. The junior from Greece, Zafeiri, upset 29th-ranked Fabiana Gamboa 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. Yurchenko, a sophomore from Ukraine, upset 12th-ranked Jazmin Zamorano 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, at No. 4 singles.

UCO takes a break from conference play with a midweek road trip to Durant. The Bronchos are making up a previously postponed game at Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday. Central will then make an MIAA road trip north for matchups with No. 12 Washburn (April 12) and No. 17 Northwest Missouri (April 13).
