Henschel Wins Title, Benedetto Sets Record, In UCM Open Tourney

Three Bronchos Compete Unattached In Missouri In Sunday Open Tournament

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Jason Henschel's title and Dominik Benedetto's record-setting performance highlighted a trio of unattached UCO grapplers competing in the Kaufman Brand Bayly Open at Central Missouri Sunday.

Henschel went 3-0 to win the Elite bracket 133-pound title, besting three MIAA opponents with two bonus-point victories. Benedetto finished runner-up in the 141-pound Amateur bracket but served up four straight tech. falls to reach the final in setting a new UCO record.

Cameron Braswell was the third Broncho to compete in the tournament. He went 2-2 in the 174-pound Amateur bracket with two bonus-point wins.

Henschel started his day in the quarterfinals and whipped Central Missouri's Brock Smith 15-0 before earning a 3-0 decision in the semifinals against Newman's Jevin Foust. In the first-place match, Henschel spent 1:09 working James Wright to his back to earn a fall and the title.

Benedetto, a redshirt freshman from Elgin, has competed in four open tournaments unattached and has racked up 14 technical falls already this season. That mark is more than any wrestler in school history for a single season and it's still the first month of the season.

Four-time All-American and two-time national champion Kyle Evans (2007-08) and three-time All-American and two-time champ Shawn Streck (2023-24) both had 11 tech. falls during a single season in their careers.

Benedetto had four at the season-opening Falcon Open at Friends University. He piled up three at the Viking Open at Carl Albert State College and three more at the Drury Open before the four he managed Sunday at Central Missouri.

UCO is off for two weeks before traveling to Wichita, Kansas to take on Newman in an MIAA dual. The Bronchos will also compete in the Bob Smith Open at Fort Hays State and the annual Midwest Classic Dec. 14-15 in Indianapolis.
