Josh Taylor Wins Title To Lead UCO At Falcon Open

PARK CITY, Kan. – Josh Taylor captured the 141-pound title to lead Central Oklahoma in the season-opening Falcon Open Saturday.

The Bronchos took 19 individuals to the all-day tournament that attracted 33 teams and required 13 hours to complete, returning with three placers. Taylor was the lone champion, while 133 Jason Henschel and 184 Seth Sarasua both finished second.

"It was a long day," head coach Todd Steidley said. "This was a good tournament to start with and it was great to get some of our younger guys out there. We did some good things, but we've obviously got a lot of things to work on."

Taylor went 5-0 on his way to the gold medal. The sophomore opened with a 16-1 technical fall before following with four consecutive decisions.

He clipped Embry-Riddle's Christian Lopez 4-2 in the semifinals, then used a pair of takedowns to topple Thomas Williams of St. Thomas 6-2 in the finals.

Henschel outscored his first two opponents a combined 32-0 in scoring consecutive technical falls before posting 3-1 and 7-1 wins to make the finals. The senior transfer from Northern State didn't compete in the title bout due to injury.

Sarasua waltzed into the finals in dominating fashion. The senior outscored his first two foes a combined 24-3 in notching back-to-back major decisions, then had a first-period fall and easy 8-1 semifinal win before falling 13-2 in the finals

Eli Kirk didn't place at 133, but the redshirt freshman went 5-1 before reaching the six-match limit for the day. He had four bonus-point wins with two major decisions, a fall and a technical fall.

Zane Coleman had the same fate at 174. The senior lost his first match of the day, then reeled off five straight consolation victories – two by fall, one by major decision – before reaching the six-match threshold.

Dailey Jennings (141) and Paul Sharp (Hvy) both went 4-2 on the day. Jennings had two technical falls and two major decisions, while Sharp notched a pair of falls.

The Bronchos open the dual season next weekend, going on the road to take on No. 8 Maryville (Nov. 9) and No. 3 McKendree (Nov 10).
