Bronchos Maul Lions In Joplin

Central Oklahoma Picks Up 4-1 Win At Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. – Central Oklahoma turned a narrow halftime lead into a route as the Bronchos got back in the win column with a 4-1 victory at Missouri Southern Sunday afternoon.

The Bronchos improved to 7-5-2 on the season with the win, and 4-2-2 in the MIAA. Central has two weeks left in the regular season and is in fifth place in the MIAA standings.

Sunday, UCO and MSSU met for the first and only time this season and the Bronchos played an even match for almost the first 45 minutes.

But in the 39th minute, Avery Bass sent a goal kick well past midfield and Caleah Carter redirected the ball to Jordan Tanges, who ended up with open space on the right side of the box. She fired a shot and put it just over the end line off the cross bar and UCO took a 1-0 lead.

That's how the game went to halftime, with the Bronchos outshooting the host Lions 9-2 in the first 45 minutes.

In the second, UCO opened it up.

Carter scored in the opening minute with an assist from Harmony Turner. Then Turner scored in the 53rd with an assist from Madison Linavong. Rebekah George capped off the run with a goal in the 54th minute, assists for Turner and Carter on the play, and UCO led 4-0 just nine minutes into the second half.

The Bronchos outshot the Lions 23-3 on the day, with a 13-1 advantage in shots on goal. UCO didn't make a save on the day. Bass played 60 minutes and never faced a shot on goal. Olivia Vigil played the final 30 minutes and only saw one shot, the MSSU score in the 83rd minute of the match.

Central Oklahoma has two home games next week and two road games to finish the regular season the following week. The Bronchos host Northeastern State Friday night and Rogers State next Sunday afternoon. UCO closes it out with Pittsburg State and Newman.

The 2024 MIAA Soccer Championship is scheduled for Nov. 8-17 with the top eight teams in the final league standings making the postseason. The top four teams will host a quarterfinals match on campus, and the four advancing teams will meet in Wichita, Kan. for the semifinals and final.
