UCO Dominates Northwest In Big MIAA Win

Central Oklahoma Posts 48-20 Victory Over Northwest Missouri

EDMOND – No. 13 Central Oklahoma got another big performance from its top-rated offense and forced three turnovers on defense in route to a 48-20 win over Northwest Missouri Saturday at Chad Richison Stadium.

Jett Huff threw for 451 yards and three touchdowns, Terrill Davis set another school record for receptions in a single game with 15 catches, and the Bronchos put up 530 yards of total offense. On the defensive side, Zhyon Bell intercepted a pass in the end zone when the game was 7-0, Dylan Buchheit took a fumble return 70 yards for a touchdown, and JK Moore picked off another pass to put an exclamation point on the win.

"All around that was a really good team performance, I'm really proud of our guys," UCO football coach Adam Dorrel said. "For the offense to perform at that level against a defense like Northwest is special. And our defense played great today. We needed to force turnovers and they did that. All around, that was just a really good game for us."

After both teams punted on their first possessions, then UCO forced a second 3 & out, UCO's offense got going with a 3-play, 72-yard scoring drive that lasted all of 22 seconds. Dominique Dunn hauled in a 66-yard reception that put the ball on the 1-yard line before Andrew Carney punched in the touchdown.

Northwest got its offense going on the third possession of the game, but the 13-play, 62-yard drive ended in the end zone when Bell picked off a pass.

The Bronchos answered with an 80-yard scoring drive capped off by a 33-yard touchdown pass from Huff to Davis to make it 14-0.

Northwest did keep some momentum on offense and followed with a 10-play, 85-yard scoring drive to make it 14-7, but the Bronchos were just getting started.

Christian Romero hauled in a 27-yard touchdown pass from Huff, then Nicky Quevedo connected on a 29-yard field goal to give Central Oklahoma a 24-7 lead it took to halftime.

In the third quarter, after UCO started with a 3 & out, the Broncho defense got the ball back for its offense, who in turn went 65 yards on five plays in 1:47 to score again. It was Carney punching it in from 1-yard out for the second time in the game and that made it 31-7, UCO.

Northwest responded with 10 unanswered points to get it down to a two-score game, 31-17, and that's how the game went to the fourth quarter.

Quevedo was called upon again and this time the All-American kicker from Azle, Texas connected on a career-long 47-yard field goal to put the Bronchos up, 34-17.

Northwest got those three back with its second field goal of the game. 34-20, UCO.

But the Bronchos would put an end to any thoughts of a comeback.

Jacob Delso made a miraculous catch in the endzone to haul in a 24-yard touchdown. The play was called incomplete, challenged and overturned, and the touchdown made it 41-20. Finally, with 2:16 to play in the game, a Northwest complete pass gave the Bearcats a first down, but the receiver fumbled the ball. Buchheit picked it up and went 70 yards for the touchdown. It marked the first time since Oct. 6, 2022 the Bronchos had a fumble returned for a touchdown.

Moore's interception came on the next possession. Then the Bronchos ran out the clock on the win.

Huff finished the game 29-for-40 with 451 yards and three touchdowns. It's the second 400-yard game this season for the sophomore quarterback. Huff connected with seven different receivers, but just over half went to Davis.

Davis, who set a school record with 14 receptions in UCO's upset of No. 2-ranked Central Missouri, broke that record with 15 catches on Saturday. He totaled 176 yards receiving and had the one touchdown.

Ashton Schumann also had four receptions for 47 yards, Delso finished with three for 61 and the one score, and Madison Ridgeway also had three receptions for 37 yards. Dunn had two catches for 84 yards. Romero had one catch, and Braden Turner also hauled in one pass for nine yards.

Jaylen Cottrell, the nation's leading rusher, managed 33 yards on 12 carries against the best run defense UCO has seen this year. William Mason added 20 yards on seven carries, Huff finished with 15 yards, and Dev Matthews added nine. With Carney's two 1-yard touchdown runs, the Bronchos put 79 yards rushing against the team that entered the game allowing only 81 yards per game.

Northwest also had the top-rated pass defense at 181 yards allowed per game before Huff torched the Bearcats for 451 yards.

Buchheit had a team-high six tackles, a half-tackle in the backfield, and one pass breakup to go with the fumble recovery scoop-and-score. Jack Puckett also had a team-high six tackles and a QB hurry. He put one ball carrier down in the backfield.

Hunter Largent and Zane Adams both had sacks in the game. Along with Bell and Moore's interceptions, UCO broke up four passes in the game.

Central Oklahoma improved to 6-0 with the win. The Bronchos will look to go 7-0 for the first time since 2003 next Saturday when the President's Cup is on the line at Northeastern State. UCO is also going for a 10th consecutive win in the rivalry game with the Riverhawks. Kickoff in Tahlequah, Oklahoma is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Central returns home in Week 8 and will host Pittsburg State on Homecoming. The MIAA's TV game of the week will be shown live on The MIAA Network, 38 The Spot in Kansas City, and KOCB in Oklahoma City.
