Minter Magic!

EDMOND (May 12) – Down to its last strike in the bottom of the seventh inning, Central Oklahoma found a way to stay alive and then stunned Oklahoma Baptist in the second round of the NCAA Division II Central Regional I Tournament Friday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Amelya Huggins came through with a two-out, two-strike run-scoring bloop single in the seventh to pull the Bronchos into a 1-1 tie and Jacee Minter opened the eighth with a line-drive shot over the left field wall for a dramatic 2-1 walk-off victory.

No. 4-ranked UCO improved to 49-6 with its 18th straight win and moved into Saturday's 11 a.m. finals against No. 18 Harding, with the "if necessary" game at 1:30 p.m. The Bison won two elimination games Friday, beating Southeastern Oklahoma 6-1 before edging OBU 3-2.

"It was a wild game," head coach Cody White said. "We never quit in that one, even though we didn't play our best. We felt like we were going to win that game.

"Our girls never give up. That's what this team does, that's what they pride themselves on. This team just never gives up."

The Bronchos failed to capitalize on two prime scoring opportunities in the first and second innings, with OBU scoring its lone run in the fourth.

It looked like that would be enough when the Bison got two quick outs to open the seventh, but Rylee Lemos gave the Bronchos new life with a single to left-center.

Emily Deramus was hit by pitch to move Lemos to second and the speedy freshman raced around the score the tying run when Huggins' bloop hit dropped into shallow left-center field.

Energized by the sudden turnaround, pitcher Terin Ritz quickly put the Bison down in order in the top of the eighth and then Minter sent the vocal UCO crowd into a frenzy.

The junior star took a ball and a strike before smoking the third pitch, smacking a no-doubt line drive to left for her 10th homer of the season to end the drama.

Ritz went the distance in the circle, giving up just two hits. The sophomore right-hander struck out two and walked one in improving to 23-1 with her 14th complete game.

The Bronchos had a chance to take early control in the game, but failed to score after loading the bases with two outs in the first and again with one out in the second.

OBU manufactured its lone run in the fourth with a lead-off bunt single, a walk, sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly.

UCO finished with seven hits, getting two from Lemos. The Bronchos struggled in the field for the first time all year, committing a season-high three errors.
