UCO Closes Regular Season With Win

WICHITA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma wrapped up the 2023 regular season with a 6-1 victory at Newman Sunday and now turns its attention to the postseason.
 
The Bronchos swept the doubles matches to earn a 1-0 lead in the match, then won 5 of 6 singles matches to run away from the Jets.
 
UCO clinched a spot in the 2023 MIAA Women's Tennis Championship, which the Bronchos are hosting at Edmond Center Court April 21-23. The Bronchos earned the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament and will play No. 4 seed Northeastern State Friday at 4 p.m. in the quarterfinals. The winner will advance to play top-seeded regular season champion Northwest Missouri Saturday at 10 a.m. in the semifinals. The 2023 MIAA Women's Tennis Championship match is scheduled for Sunday, April 23 at 10 a.m.
 
UCO got out in front of Newman in the season finale with a sweeping performance in doubles play. Nikki Boyar and Blythe Buntrock, ranked No. 4 in the country in the latest ITA Doubles Top 50, won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles on Sunday. Tizia Brocks and Karyna Yurchenko at No. 2 doubles and Nefeli Zafeiri and Pete Komada at No. 3 doubles, both won 6-4.
 
Buntrock, Boyar and Yurchenko all picked up straight-set victories as the dual turned to singles competition. Buntrock won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, Boyar won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4, and Yurchenko won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles, giving UCO a 4-0 lead in the match and the win.
 
No. 32-ranked Komada dropped her first set, 1-6, but rebounded with a 6-4, 10-8 rally to win at No. 2 singles. Brocks also went three sets and won. She won 6-4 before dropping a 2-6 decision in the second set and then picked up a 10-8 win to take No. 5 singles.
 
Zafeiri conceded the only point to Newman on Sunday, falling 6-4, 2-6, 8-10 at No. 3 singles.
 
Central Oklahoma will compete in the 2023 MIAA Women's Tennis Championships this weekend at Edmond Center Court. The Bronchos look to win the league title for the fourth consecutive time (2019, 2021, 2022).
