UCO Places Seven In Broncho Open

EDMOND (Nov. 5) – Central Oklahoma made its home debut Sunday at Hamilton Field House and finished with seven placers in the inaugural Broncho Open.

The defending NCAA Division II national champion and No. 3-ranked Bronchos had 23 individuals compete, including 21 freshmen, redshirt freshmen and sophomores. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and Fort Hays State all had entries in the tournament.

UCO got runner-up finishes from 141 Ryder Ramsey, 184 Garrett Wells and 197 Emmanuel Skillings, while 149 Antonio George and 165 Jaxon Randall took third. Guy Clevenger and Eli Kirk were co-third at 125.

"It was a great tournament for our younger guys," head coach Todd Steidley said. "We got in a lot of quality matches against good competition and that can do nothing but help us."

Ramsey and Skillings both breezed into the finals before falling to OSU opponents. Ramsey started his day with a 15-0 technical fall and followed with two easy decisions, while Skillings scored a 20-3 technical fall and 8-2 win.

Wells competed in a six-wrestler round-robin bracket and bounced back from an opening loss with an 18-3 technical fall and first-period pin to take second.

George and Randall each went 3-1 with three bonus-point wins in finishing third. George rebounded from a first-round loss with a 20-second fall and then outscored in last two opponents a combined 30-1, while Randall had a first-period pin and back-to-back technical falls.

Clevenger and Kirk had identical success in making the consolation finals, both going 3-1 with a pair of bonus wins before opting not to meet in the third-place bout.

Five other wrestlers won two matches on the day – 141 Josh Taylor, 141 Will Heger, 174 Tucker Waitman, Hvy Wendell Davis and Hvy Alex Sutterfield. Taylor and Heger were forced to withdraw due to injury, as did 149 Bam West and 157 Bryce Dauphin.

The Bronchos return to action Saturday with a trip to Poteau, Okla. for the Viking Open.
