Bronchos Flatten OBU In Season Opener

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Nov. 1) – Zane Coleman and Garrett Wells scored back-to-back falls to highlight a dominating season-opening performance that carried Central Oklahoma to a 42-0 drubbing of Ouachita Baptist Wednesday night.

The No. 3-ranked Bronchos recorded six bonus-point routs and had a 27-2 takedown advantage on the night in winning for the 33rd time in their last 34 duals.

Coleman had a first-period pin at 174 pounds and Wells followed with a second-period fall at 184 to lead the way. UCO also got technical falls from 125 Guy Clevenger and 157 Gabe Johnson, while 149 Antonio George and 165 Hunter Jump added major decisions.

Peter Rolle (133), Ryder Ramsey (141), Emmanuel Skillings (197) and Braden Morgan (Hvy) also won as the Bronchos rolled to their seventh straight win in the series. UCO has outscored the Tigers 300-27 in that span.

It was also the 18th consecutive Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association victory for the Bronchos, who have won the last three league titles. OBU joined the conference as an associate member this season.

"I thought overall our guys were pretty aggressive and kept trying to score points," said head coach Todd Steidley, who had just one returning starter (Johnson) in the lineup. "It was a good start for us, but obviously there's a lot we still need to work on and we saw some of that tonight."

Clevenger got UCO off to a great start in his debut in the lineup at 125. The redshirt freshman needed just 2:11 to rack up five near-falls in a 16-0 technical fall to stake the Bronchos to a quick 5-0 lead.

Rolle pulled out a tight 6-5 win behind a pair of takedowns, Ramsey followed with a 12-7 victory behind two takedowns and a near-fall and UCO recorded bonus wins in the next five bouts.

George got that streak started at 149 with a 19-6 major decision behind a six-takedown attack, the second-ranked Johnson had three near-falls and two takedowns in a first-period technical fall and Jump tallied five takedowns in a 17-4 major decision.

Coleman didn't waste time in his first match in a UCO singlet, striking for a quick takedown and near-fall before getting the pin at the 1:03 mark. Wells wasn't tested in his Broncho debut as the redshirt freshman ended it late in the second period after building a 16-3 lead.

Skillings prevailed 7-2 behind a pair of first-period takedowns and Morgan clinched a tough 10-7 win the finale on a takedown with 32 seconds remaining.

The Bronchos return to action Sunday with the inaugural UCO Open at Hamilton Field House. First-round action starts at 10 a.m.
