Central Oklahoma Celebrates 500th Match With Victory

Bronchos Beat Baptist 1-0 In Historic Game

SHAWNEE, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team celebrated its 500th match in school history Saturday night with a 1-0 victory at Oklahoma Baptist.

The Bronchos are now 4-0 on the season following the win. UCO is 340-124-36 since beginning play in 1998.

"I want to say thank you to everyone who has ever been a part of this program," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We've been fortunate to be successful for a long time and it was great to get a win on the 500th game. That's pretty cool. We probably could've done more tonight, but we got the win and we got a shutout."

Cook has been the head coach for each and every one of the 500 matches since 1998. The history of the program carries a few impressive numbers.

500 matches. 340 wins. 1,197 goals scored. 229 shutouts.

Saturday, Central Oklahoma controlled the match. While the Bronchos couldn't get their offense to fire on all cylinders in the first half, UCO easily controlled possession and spent most of the first 45 on its offensive half. The Bronchos did outshoot OBU 6-1 in the first half and put three of those shots on goal.

But it didn't take long in the second half before UCO broke through. Central was pressing forward as it had all night when Madison Linavong found herself in a race for the ball against the Oklahoma Baptist goalkeeper. Linavong won that race and tapped in an easy shot to put Central Oklahoma on the scoreboard.

And that was enough.

UCO's defense continued to limit opportunities for OBU. The Bison did manage six second-half shots and put two of those on goal, including one in the 85th minute that Caroline Faulkner rejected. The Bison found their best chance squandered and Central's defense got back to shutting it down for the final five minutes on its way to victory.

Linavong entered the game with a team-high five assists and she was the team leader in points. She added her first goal of the season and now has seven points in four games this Fall.

Linavong took a team-high three shots Saturday in 77 minutes of play.

Harmony Turner took two shots while Zoe Ross, Eden Jones, Avery Holland, Lauren Hinnenkamp, Rebecca Tweedy, Adria Ramirez and Emily Tincher all took one shot each.

Kylee Wickersham led the Broncho defense to its second shutout in four games this season, playing the full 90 minutes on the back line. Kassidy Collins also played the full 90 on the back line.

Faulkner, making her first start of the season, played all 90 minutes in goal and made four saves.

Central Oklahoma, now 4-0 in 2022, will play three of the next four at home over the next two weeks. UCO hosts Newman at Tom Thompson Field Friday, Sept. 9 before a quick trip east to Tahlequah to take on Northeastern State. UCO then hosts Rogers State and NSU the following weekend. The first three of the next four are non-conference matches against UCO's MIAA counterparts. The second NSU matchup is the first league contest of the year for the Bronchos.
