Bronchos Will Play Washburn For League Title Sunday

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - No. Central Oklahoma beat No. 42 Northwest Missouri 5-2 on Saturday in an MIAA match that was moved from Maryville and indoors due to weather.

Central Oklahoma improved to 16-1 on the season with the win and the Bronchos are now 7-0 in the MIAA with one match left on Sunday. That will come against Washburn, which is also 7-0 in the MIAA. The 2022 regular season finale will determine the 2022 regular season champion.

"We played good today against a tough opponent and now we get play for the championship," UCO head tennis coach Joe Vann said. "It doesn't always work out this way with the last match of the year but it did this time and it's pretty cool. We'll be focused and ready to go."

Central Oklahoma earned the doubles point Saturday with wins at the first and second spots in the lineup. Top-rated Mae Canete and Christine Canete won 6-1 at No. 1 and Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Tizia Brocks won 6-3 at No. 2 while Northwest won a match 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.

UCO got the point though and took a 1-0 lead into Singles.

The top half of Central's lineup handled it from there. Mae won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Christine won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, and Abidullina won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to clinch the match.

Brocks also won 7-6 (4), 6-4 at No. 5 singles to give UCO five points in the match.

Northwest won at No. 4 singles (7-5, 1-6, 10-6) and No. 6 singles 6-4, 7-6 (5).

Central Oklahoma and Washburn now meet in a battle of the two most recent MIAA Champions. Washburn won it in 2019 with UCO's only loss on the season in conference coming against the unbeaten Ichabods of Topeka, Kansas. UCO won it last year with an unbeaten record in league play and Washburn was second with its only loss to the Bronchos of Edmond, Oklahoma.
