EDMOND (Feb. 13) – Hunter Jump pulled off an upset at 165 pounds to highlight top-ranked Central Oklahoma's 40-0 trouncing of No. 24 Newman Sunday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.
The 11th-rated Jump knocked off No. 5 Kameron Frame 6-5 in the only close match of the day as the Bronchos moved to 13-0 in polishing off just the fourth undefeated season in the program's illustrious history.
UCO also claimed its second straight Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association dual title with its 19th straight win.
Von Gray (141), Tre'Vaughn Craig (174) and Dalton Abney (197) all earned bonus points, while 149 Brik Filippo and 157 Ty Lucas won decisions. The Bronchos also picked up forfeits at three weights and no match was wrestled at 125 as both teams were open.
"It wasn't real pretty, but one of our goals coming into the season was to win all our duals and that's a tremendous accomplishment," head coach Todd Steidley said. "We had a patch-work lineup because of some injuries and I was proud of how hard the guys wrestled today."
Gray got Central going with a 15-0 technical fall in the first match at 141, collecting three near-falls, a takedown and a reverse in ending the match a minute into the second period.
The third-ranked Filippo had two takedowns and a near-fall in cruising to an 8-1 victory and the No. 3 Lucas had a pair of first-period takedowns in a 7-4 victory.
Jump then prevailed in the dual's most exciting bout, using a riding time point to get past Frame. Jump trailed 5-2 in the second period, but got a reverse with 20 seconds left to pull within a point.
The redshirt freshman escaped 25 seconds into the final stanza to make it 5-5 and neither wrestler came close to scoring the rest of the way, with Jump's 1:39 of advantage time giving him the winning point.
Craig racked up eight takedowns in an impressive 18-7 major decision at 174 and the top-rated Abney improved to 19-0 with a 13-0 blitzing at 197. Abney had two takedowns, two near-falls and a reverse while piling up more than four minutes riding time with his 11th bonus win.
"Our guys have worked really hard all year and we've done a lot of good things," Steidley said. "Now it's time to get ready for the postseason, so there's still a lot to get done in the next couple of weeks."
UCO is off until going to St. Charles, Mo. Feb. 26 at the NCAA Division II Regional IV Tournament. The top-three finishers at each of the 10 weights in the regional qualify for the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, which are set for March 11-12 in St. Louis, Mo.
