No. 4 Bronchos Flatten No. 17 Northern State

EDMOND (Nov. 4) – Anthony DesVigne cruised to a big upset at 184 pounds to highlight Central Oklahoma's season-opening 30-3 trouncing of Northern State Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

DesVigne knocked off sixth-ranked Treyton Cacek 8-2 and the No. 4 Bronchos took nine of 10 matches from the No. 17 Wolves in notching their 20th straight win.

"Anthony wrestled a great match and came out with a big win," head coach Todd Steidley said. "He's one of the hardest workers on the team, so it was good to see him rewarded.

"Overall I saw some good things, but we've got a lot of work to do. Northern has a tough team and they exposed us in some areas. We have to get better in every phase that's for sure."

UCO earned bonus points at two weights, getting a technical fall from Hvy Braden Morgan and major decision from 133 Dylan Lucas. The Bronchos also got wins from 125 Studd Morris, 141 Nate Keim, 157 Gabe Johnson, 165 Ty Lucas, 174 Hunter Jump and 197 Dalton Abney.

The lone loss came at 149, where NSU's 11th-ranked Wyatt Turnquist upended No. 3 Brik Filippo 6-4.

DesVigne's performance was easily the high point of the night for the Bronchos.

The junior entered the night with a 29-23 career record at three different weights (157, 165, 174) and dominated in his debut at 184. DesVigne was simply too strong for Cacek, powering his way to takedowns in the first and second periods in taking a 4-0 lead.

DesVigne escaped early in the third to make it 5-0 before Cacek got on the scoreboard with a takedown. But he couldn't control DesVigne, who escaped and added another takedown to put an exclamation point on the 8-2 victory.

Morgan had two takedowns and three near-falls in ending the night with a 15-0 rout midway through the second period. Dylan Lucas -- wrestling his first match after a five-year layoff – bolted to an 8-0 first-period lead en route to a 12-2 romp.

Abney prevailed in a showdown of two of Division II's best 197-pounders. The defending national champion and top-ranked junior trimmed No. 3 Cole Huss 4-1 behind a first-period takedown, second-period escape and riding time point in winning for the 27th consecutive time.

Morris' first-period takedown was the difference in a 4-2 win, Keim piled up more than four minutes riding time in an easy 7-1 decision and Johnson hung on for a 10-7 triumph.

Ty Lucas had three takedowns in a methodical 8-3 decision and Jump clinched a 5-2 victory with a third-period reverse.

The Bronchos will take a contingent of 22 individuals to Baldwin City, Kan. Sunday for the Dan Harris Open before going to Springfield, Mo. next Thursday to face Drury.
