UCO Bounced By Tigers

HAYS, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team lost its second game in a row this weekend, falling to 11th-ranked Fort Hays State 73-58 in MIAA play.

A trio of Bronchos scored in double figures to lead the way. Kelsey Johnson led UCO with 13 points, Jaci Littell scored 12, and Brooke Rayner added 11 in the effort.

"We played them pretty even in three out of four quarters but the run they made in the second was too much," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "You can't get in that kind of a hole against a good team. And we couldn't get out of it."

Central shot just 36 percent (21-for-59) from the field Saturday and only 31 percent (5-for-16) from behind the arc.

Central played well in the first quarter, jumping out to an early 5-1 lead after the first two minutes of play. Hays tied it in the middle of the quarter and retook a brief lead. But Littell tied the game 13-13 with one minute to play. That's how the first quarter ended.

But in the second quarter. Fort Hays State went on a terror. Hays outscored the Bronchos 10-1 in the first few minutes of the quarter and kept it up for the entire 10 minutes. Central managed just eight points in the quarter and went to halftime with a 38-21 deficit.

UCO shot just 22 percent in the first half, making only 7 of 31 shots. The Bronchos made only 1 of 9 from behind the arc.

The rest of the game stayed even.

Central did hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter, which was half of the shots it made. The Bronchos went 6-for-16 in the third quarter and tied Fort Hays State 18-18 in the frame. Central outscored Fort Hays State 19-17 in the fourth quarter but they early deficit could not be overcome.

Johnson led the team in scoring and also had five rebounds. She finished 4-for-10 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Littell was 5-for-8 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the line. She added five rebounds and two assists. Rayner went 4-for-9 from the floor, 3-for-5 from behind the arc, and also had three boards, two assits, and one steal.

Clary Donica added seven points and a team-high six rebounds off the bench for the Bronchos. Caley Young scored four points and grabbed two rebounds. Avery Allen (three assists) and Karly Wadsworth both scored three points as did Kaci Richardson (three boards).

Central Oklahoma is now 9-6 on the season and plays at home next week. UCO will host Newman next Saturday.
