Central Downed In Season Finale

Bronchos Head To Postseason Wednesday

JOPLIN, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team came up short 67-57 in the final game of the 2020-21 regular season Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos finish the regular season 14-8 overall and now turn their attention to the postseason. UCO will take on Emporia State in next week's MIAA Tournament.

"We were just a little flat today on the offensive end and it didn't work out for us," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "I think we did a good job defensively but we couldn't make enough shots. We'll just put this behind us and get ready for the postseason."

Central Oklahoma only held one lead Saturday afternoon. Missouri Southern opened the game 5-0 before UCO answered back with five straight points. But MSSU regained the lead and held it firm for almost the entire game. The Bronchos trailed 17-16 at the end of the first quarter thanks to an 8-0 run to end the quarter

In the second, Central hit another snag on offense and only made two shots in the quarter. The Bronchos were 2-for-13 in the quarter, with one 3-pointer, but did add seven made free-throws.

UCO trailed by four at halftime after an 8-for-27 performance on offense.

The Bronchos didn't make up any ground in the third quarter, but didn't lose any either. After both teams scored 14 in the frame, Central went to the final quarter of play only down 47-43.

In the fourth, Clary Donica made a layup with 8:40 to play to make it 51-47. Jaci Littell then hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one, 51-50. Kelsey Johnson hit a pair of free-throws with 5:31 to play that tied the game and then gave the Bronchos a one-point lead, 52-51.

But Missouri Southern answered right back with a 3-pointer to go back in front and Central never recovered.

Littell led UCO with 12 points Saturday. She hit 4 of 6 shots, including three 3-pointers, and also made one free-throw. Johnson finished with eight points and 11 rebounds. Taylor Factor also scored eight points off the bench.

Central Oklahoma finished 15-for-48 (31.3 percent) overall. UCO was 7-for-13 from behind the arc and went 20-for-26 from the free-throw line.

Central Oklahoma will travel in the first round of the MIAA Tournament next week. UCO landed the No. 5 seed in the tournament and will visit Emporia State Wednesday, March 3 at a time yet to be determined.
