Kelsey Johnson Joins Rare Company In Broncho Victory

EDMOND – Kelsey Johnson scored 15 points and gathered 10 rebounds Thursday night to lead Central Oklahoma to a 69-58 victory over Washburn in an MIAA matchup at Hamilton Field House.

The stat line for the grad student from Washington, Oklahoma was enough for her fifth-straight double-double this season. But it was also more than enough to put her in rare company.

Johnson is the 13th player to reach 1,000 career points and the eighth player to reach 500 career boards. And she is just the sixth player to do both.

"We're sure glad she's on our team," UCO assistant coach Heather Davis said. "But seriously, Kelsey is just the kid that shows up to work every day, knows her role, and she deserves this. She works so hard to be great teammate and leader and we are proud of her."

Davis played with or coached four of the six members of the 1000-500 Club.

Johnson, with two seasons at UT-Arlington before Central, has a total of 1,110 points and 597 rebounds in her collegiate career.

Central needed every bit of Johnson's seventh double-double of the 2021-22 season Thursday night.

The Bronchos trailed Washburn 22-19 after the first quarter but built a 39-32 lead at halftime. UCO soon led by its biggest margin, 12 points, when Jaci Littell hit a pair of free-throws in the third quarter to put the Bronchos up 49-37.

But Washburn got to within four midway through the fourth quarter and again late, before a personal 7-0 run by Johnson to end the game gave UCO the victory.

Alayzha Knapp also scored in double figures, hitting her season average on the mark at 10 points. She added four rebounds and four blocked shots. Brooke Rayner also scored 10 points to go with five assists and three steals.

Littell made it four Bronchos in double figures. She also scored 10 and had three rebounds. Littell hit two 3-pointers to go with a 4-for-4 night at the free-throw line.

Clary Donica added nine points and five rebounds. Karly Wadsworth added eight points with two made threes herself. Aliyah Llanusa scored four points and hit her season average with two steals. Rory Geer scored three points, sinking a third-quarter buzzer beater for her only basket of the game.

Central Oklahoma shot 40 percent Thursday at 24-for-60 from the field. The Bronchos were 7-for-15 (a season-best 46.7 percent) from behind the 3-point line and 14-for-17 (82.4) from the free-throw line.

Central Oklahoma continues MIAA play this weekend. The Bronchos host Emporia State Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
