UCO Drops MIAA Opener

JOPLIN, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team dropped its conference opener Thursday night, falling at Missouri Southern 81-74.

Central Oklahoma struggled to find a rhythm Thursday, holding no more than a one-point lead in the game. The lead changed four times and was tied four more times, but Central only had an advantage for a total of 1:06 Thursday night.

Brooke Rayner led the Bronchos, scoring a team-high 20 points. The junior guard was 7-for-8 from the floor, hit all three of her 3-point attempts, and was also a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. She added five rebounds and five assists to go with one steal.

Kelsey Johnson added 15 points and 10 rebounds while Alayzha Knapp scored 14 points to go with three boards. Karly Wadsworth, with 10 points, also scored in double figures.

UCO had just eight bench points though. Aliyah Llanusa added seven in a start and Clary Donica and Ginger Reece both scored four points off the bench.

UCO found itself in an early hole. The Bronchos hit just four shots in the first quarter on 15 attempts, a 26.7 percent mark. MSSU led by as many as 12 after a 7-0 run midway through the opening quarter and held a 19-11 lead after the first 10 minutes were through.

Central outscored Southern 21-16 in the second quarter to cut into the deficit. The Bronchos hit 50 percent of their shots in the second frame, going 8-for-16 from the floor and 3-for-6 from behind the arc.

UCO still trailed at halftime though, 35-32.

A 23-13 tally in the third quarter put the Bronchos in a hole they couldn't dig out of before suffering the seven-point setback.

Central Oklahoma is back in action Saturday to wrap up a six-game road trip. The Bronchos play at Pittsburg State at 1:30 p.m. in southeastern Kansas. UCO will finally return home next weekend to host Washburn on Thursday, Dec. 9 at Hamilton Field House.
