UCO Picked Second In MIAA Mat Poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Nov. 5) -- Central Oklahoma has been tabbed for a second-place finish in the 2021-22 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association wrestling standings, according to the coaches' poll released Friday.

The Bronchos of sixth-year head coach Todd Steidley received one first-place vote and finished with 13 points in balloting of the league's five head coaches. Nebraska-Kearney earned the remaining four first-place votes to lead the poll with 16 points, while Fort Hays State (10 points), Newman (seven) and Central Missouri (four) rounding out the standings.

Central won the MIAA dual title in 2019-20 and no champion was crowned last year due to scheduling difficulties brought on by the COVID-19 health crisis. The Bronchos went 5-0 in duals last year before winning the regional title and finishing sixth in the national tournament, with five All-Americans back from that team.

The Lopers and UCO are both expected to be prime challengers for the NCAA Division II national championship this season. UNK was ranked second and the Bronchos fourth in the national preseason poll.

Central Oklahoma opens the 2021-22 season Wednesday with a 7 p.m. home dual against NAIA rival Oklahoma City.
