Bronchos Open Season With Rout Of NWOSU

EDMOND (Nov. 12) – Defense led to offense for Central Oklahoma as the Bronchos opened the 2020-21 season with a 79-48 drubbing of Northwestern Oklahoma Friday night at Hamilton Field House on the first day of the Central Region Classic.

UCO's suffocating full-court pressure forced the Rangers into 15 first-half turnovers and the Bronchos turned those miscues into 25 points in taking a big 45-22 halftime lead. NWOSU never got closer than 19 in the final two periods.

"Our defense really set the tone early," head coach Guy Hardaker said. "We capitalized on the turnovers, even though we really didn't shoot it that great. We were excited to get the season going and it was a good start for us."

Twelve players scored for the Bronchos, including four in double figures. Central shot 42.4 percent (28-of-66) from the field and came up with 15 steals while also limiting the Rangers to 30.5-percent shooting (18-of-59).

Kelsey Johnson led UCO's balanced attack with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Ginger Reece, Jaci Littell and Karly Wadsworth all finished with 11 points. Avery Allen, Brooke Rayner and Lexi Foreman made three steals apiece to lead the thievery.

The Bronchos never trailed, forcing three quick turnovers in jumping on top 7-0 behind three straight fast-break buckets – back-to-back layups by Littell and Rayner followed by a Littell 3-pointer from the wing.

Littell ended up with nine points in the quarter that ended with UCO on top 20-10 and the lead reached 14 at 33-19 on an Allen jumper at the 4:48 mark.

It was 33-21 after an NWOSU bucket, then the Bronchos ended the half with a 12-1 run to break the game open.

Wadsworth started the spurt with a trey from the corner with 3:13 left and Foreman ended it with a fast-break layup after making a steal at half-court that made it 45-21 with 1:01 left. The Rangers made one free throw at 0:27 to arrange the halftime score.

Central pushed its cushion to 27 (60-33) on a Reece 3-pointer late in the third quarter and the Bronchos coasted in from there fo their sixth straight season-opening win.

The Bronchos are back in action Saturday, taking on Mary at 5:30 p.m.
