Central Drops Exhibition Match at UT-Arlington

Canete Shines In Broncho Debut

ARLINGTON, Texas – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team unofficially opened the 2021 season Sunday with a 5-2 loss in an exhibition match at UT-Arlington. Central will play its first official match in two weeks.

UCO did open the match on a high note, winning the doubles point against its Division I foe. Isabella Dunlap and Adel-Byanu Abidullina won in sweeping fashion, 6-0, to give the Bronchos one of the two necessary wins in doubles play to take the point. Mae Canete and Paola Landin then won 6-3 at the No. 2 spot in the lineup to give Central a second win and the point.

Canete, making her Central debut, followed the win in doubles play with another in singles. The true freshman played at the No. 2 spot in the lineup for singles as she did in doubles and was victorious in both of her first two career matches. She won 6-2, 6-1 over Liz Chileno in singles play.

Canete put the Bronchos up 2-0 in the match with her singles win.

Unfortunately for UCO, Canete was the only Broncho to get a win in singles play on Sunday. UTA picked up wins at the 5, 6, 3 & 4 spots to clinch the match.

At No. 1, Abidullina pushed UTA to the brink, taking its top player to a third set. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Abidullina won 6-3 in the second set. The sophomore fell short in the third though and by the slimmest of margins, 7-6.

UCO will officially open the 2021 season with a matchup against Angelo State on Saturday, Feb. 13 in San Angelo, Texas. The Bronchos will make their home debut the following Saturday when Central Oklahoma hosts Cameron.
