Bronchos Flatten Emmanuel

EDMOND (Jan. 15) – Wyatt Jordan and Dalton Abney scored opening-minute falls as No. 3-ranked Central Oklahoma demolished Emmanuel 49-0 Friday evening at Hamilton Field House to complete a perfect season-opening day.

The Bronchos recorded nine bonus-point wins in the lopsided dual, racking up 24 takedowns and 14 near-falls while outscoring the Lions 108-17 in individual points. UCO gave up just four offensive points in following up Friday afternoon's 44-0 blasting of Ouachita Baptist.

Jordan needed a mere 25 seconds to end his 165-pound bout and the third-ranked Abney required just 36 seconds to polish off his outmanned foe at 197.

Central also got technical falls from 125 Garrett Steidley, 133 Thaddeus Long, 149 Gabe Johnson and 184 Heath Gray, while 141 Nate Keim and 165 Anthony DesVigne picked up major decisions. Christian Arriola received a forfeit at heavyweight and second-rated Ty Lucas had a 6-0 shutout at 157.

"It was a good day for us ," fifth-year head coach Todd Steidley said. "Our guys were excited to get going, they stayed aggressive and kept looking to score points. We're happy to finally get the season started, but there's a lot of work ahead for us."

Garrett Steidley led 10-1 after two periods, then added a reverse and four-point near-fall early in the final stanza to make it 16-1 and end it. The explosive Long piled up four takedowns and three near-falls in a 21-5 romp that concluded midway through the third period.

Keim continued the onslaught with a 15-3 rout behind a four-takedown attack and Johnson scored a reverse early in the third to finish off an 18-3 stampede in securing UCO's third technical fall in four matches.

Lucas had a pair of takedowns in his shutout, DesVigne zipped to a 10-0 first-period advantage en route to a 15-3 major decision and then Jordan whipped Myles Williams to his back right after the opening whistle in picking up the quick fall.

The top-ranked Gray scored four takedowns and three near-falls in a 17-2 demolition that ended midway through the second period, then Abney wasted little time in taking down Hayden Snowden and turning him for the quick pin.

The two teams wrestled six extra matches, with Central winning five of those. J.T. Stambeck had a 31-second fall at 184 to end the night.

UCO opens defense of its Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship Sunday, traveling to Wichita, Kan. to take on No. 23 Newman in a 9 a.m. dual.
