No. 9 UCO Whips No. 15 Midwestern State

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team picked ran its season-opening win streak to three games Friday afternoon with the ninth-ranked Bronchos blowing by 15th-ranked Midwestern State, 6-1, in a non-conference dual at Oak Tree Tennis Center.
 
Central Oklahoma is 3-0 on the young season and now have back-to-back wins against top-15 teams.
 
"We came out ready to play today and we did a good job of setting the tone early," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "I'm proud of the team for being aggressive and taking what they wanted."
 
Central Oklahoma took the doubles point for the third time in as many matches. Paola Landin and Nikki Boyar, ranked the No. 7 doubles team in the country, earned a 6-4 win at the top spot in the lineup to get the Bronchos their first win. Lexi Penn and Mariona Franco Martin teamed up at No. 3 doubles and picked up a 6-2 to win to clinch the point for the Bronchos. UCO also got a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles from Lotte Lesscher Y Post and Isabella Dunlap.
 
After the break, Landin wasted no time getting the Bronchos another point on the scoreboard. The junior cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over 43rd-ranked Cassie Curry to make it 2-0, UCO.
 
Boyar followed suit. At the fourth spot in the lineup, the sophomore from San Antonio, Texas won 6-4, 6-1, to push the UCO lead to 3-0. Post won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 to clinch the match.
 
Patricia Gribi won 6-1, 7-5 at No. 6 to give the Bronchos a 5-0 lead before MSU won their only match of the day, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2) at No. 1 singles. Franco's 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5 gave the Bronchos their final point of the day and the 6-1 victory.
 
Central Oklahoma beat No. 12 Angelo State on Sunday and now No. 15 Midwestern State. The Bronchos will get a change of pace Sunday, when UCO takes on Cowley County at Oak Tree.
 
UCO will return to the north Edmond country club next weekend. The Bronchos are hosting the ITA Indoor National Championship at Oak Tree beginning next Friday. Central will host seven schools for the eight-team tourney, with seven of the eight teams ranked in the top nine nationally.
