Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Chris Brannick

Central Edges Missouri Western

EDMOND – Kelsey Johnson made a layup with seven seconds left and the University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team made a defensive stand on the game's final possession to secure a 70-69 win over Missouri Western Thursday night at Hamilton Field House.

Johnson rebounded an off-balance shot by Shatoya Bryson under the basket and went back up for the game-winning bucket. Johnson scored 10 points in the win, the last bucket giving the junior her 13th consecutive double-digit scoring performance.

Jaci Littell scored in double figures too, chipping in 12 points. Micayla Haynes led the Bronchos with an 18-point performance.

Central led 64-47 with just over seven minutes to play in the game before a furious 22-6 run by Missouri Western to end the game. After Johnson made the final bucket, and a MWSU timeout, UCO forced enough pressure to cause an errant pass. Western corralled the loose ball but took a tough, contested shot and time expired as Littell rebounded the ball.

UCO improved to 15-5 with the win and is now 9-3 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

Bryson scored eight points, as did Brooke Rayner off the bench for the Bronchos. McKenna Pulley and Kaci Richardson both added six points and Clary Donica scored two.

UCO scored the game's first points on a wing 3-pointer from Bryson, but Central had to fight from behind in the first quarter. Missouri Western took a 6-5 lead two minutes into the game and led for the rest of the quarter. The Bronchos trailed by as many as seven, 19-12, but ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to pull within a point at the end of the first 10 minutes.

UCO held Western scoreless for the final 3:43 of the first quarter and kept that pressure defense going in the second quarter. UCO held Western scoreless for the first 2:19 of the second quarter. The Bronchos took a 23-19 lead thanks to the six-minute scoring drought by the Griffons.

Central held the lead for the rest of the quarter and took a 32-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.

UCO was a bit slow out of the gate in the third quarter, but with a 33-32 lead at the 7:29 mark, the Bronchos went on a 9-0 run to build its biggest lead of the game at that point, 42-32. Central would top that though, going up by 12, 53-41, with a minute to play when Haynes knocked down a 3-pointer. The Bronchos led 54-43 at the end of three quarters.

Central continued to build on that lead in the fourth, going ahead by 17 points, 64-47, with over seven minutes to play before Missouri Western made it interesting down the stretch.

The Bronchos finished the game shooting 45.8 percent. Central made 27 of 59 attempts from the field, just 4 of 14 from behind the arc, and 12 of 18 free-throws. UCO forced 22 turnovers.

Central has one more home game this week. The Bronchos take on Northwest Missouri Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Hamilton Field House.
