UCO Cruises Past Rogers State

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a rout of Rogers State Saturday afternoon, beating the Hillcats 72-57 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Hamilton Field House.
 
The Bronchos improved to 14-3 on the season with the win, their fifth straight, and are now 8-1 in the MIAA.
 
"I'm proud of the way the team played today because we were without a couple of starters," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "We've been pleased with our depth this season and it proved to be helpful today."
 
Brooke Rayner scored 14 points and also had six steals and four assists in her first career start. The sophomore from Stillwater, Okla. was 5-for-12 from the field, 2-for-6 from 3-point land, and 2-for-2 at the free-throw line.
 
Kelsey Johnson had a team-high 15 points and also had six rebounds. Kaci Richardson, off the bench, scored 11 points and posted a game-high 10 rebounds, six of which were on the offensive end.
 
Central Oklahoma jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The Bronchos led by as many as 12 points late in the first quarter, 21-9. UCO hit 8 of 20 shots from the floor, though none from behind the arc, and added five free-throws on eight attempts to take a 21-11 lead after the first 10 minutes.
 
The Bronchos followed a dominating first quarter with an even better second frame. UCO hit 7 of 14 shots from the floor, 3 of 6 from behind the arc, and both of its free-throw attempts in taking a commanding lead in the game. UCO led by as many as 19 in the second quarter, going ahead 40-21 with just over two minutes to play.
 
Johnson led the Bronchos in the first half, scoring nine points to go with five rebounds. All but two Bronchos scored in the first half.
 
UCO cruised through the the second half. Rogers State cut the lead to a dozen on a couple of occasions. But UCO built its biggest lead of the game, 23 points, in the third quarter and never looked back in winning its fifth-straight game.
 
Shatoya Bryson scored eight points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers. Aliyah Llanusa also scored eight points. McKenna Pulley added seven, Lauren Chancellor five, and Clary Donica scored four to go with eight rebounds.
 
UCO will hit the road for a pair of MIAA games next week. The Bronchos take on Washburn Thursday in Topeka before facing off against Emporia State.
