No. 10 UCO Blasts Oklahoma Christian

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team pounced on Oklahoma Christian Friday night, earning a 5-2 win over the Eagles of Oklahoma City at Tom Thompson Field.

Central Oklahoma got goals from four different players Friday night as it kept up a torrid pace to open the 2019 season. The Bronchos, now 2-0-1 and ranked 10th in the nation, have scored 14 goals in three games and are averaging over 30 shots per game.

"We did well to keep up the pace today and keep the pressure on Oklahoma Christian," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "I'm proud of the team for moving the ball around the way they did and making sure everyone was involved. We took another step in the right direction tonight."

Central improved to 11-0 all-time against Oklahoma Christian.

UCO got the goal scoring started in the 28th minute when junior newcomer Hannah Daaboul put home her first career goal at Central with an assist from Kelsie Eason. Daaboul found room on the right side of the box before beating the keeper to put UCO up 1-0.

It took until the second half for the Bronchos to score again, despite a 16-5 advantage on shots in the first half. But in the 51st minute, UCO was at it again.

Central drew a corner kick and Katy Tullis found her way to the northwest corner of Tom Thompson Field as the Bronchos lined up for the set piece. Tulls passed it to the short side of the box and Ashton Johnson made a play on the ball and put home not only her first goal of the season, but the junior from Bartlesville, Okla. put home her first career score to make it 2-0, UCO.

Asha Haile, Central's leading goal scorer entering the match Friday, didn't waste any more time getting in on the action. In a break toward the OC keeper, Taryn Kedzior found Haile in front of the net in the 60th minute. Haile buried the shot to put UCO up 3-0. The score was Haile's fifth of the season.

The score also moved Haile into fourth-place on Central's all-time leading goal scorer's list. The Norman, Okla. native now has 38 career goals. She trails UCO Hall of Famers Kim Brown (91) and Sally Holmes (56), and last year's National Player of the Year Katie Killion (53).

But UCO wasn't done after building a 3-0 lead.

Eason got herself a goal on a fastbreak. She had only the keeper to beat and did so with patience, dribbling right around the OC goalie and tapping in an uncontested sitter to make it 4-0, UCO.

Eason would score again, and in similar fashion. She found open space on the right side of the box and nailed an open shot to put UCO's final tally on the scoreboard.

OC notched a pair of goals in the 83rd and 86th minutes to make it 4-2. Eason's second goal made it 5-2 with just 25 seconds to play in the game.

UCO finished with 31 shots taken and 15 shots on goal. The Bronchos held OC to on 11 shots taken, four on goal. Kelsi Gibson made her season debut Friday night and made two saves in the net.

Central Oklahoma has one game left in its four-game homestand to open the 2019 season. The Bronchos host East Central Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. After UCO visits Northeastern State next Friday, the Bronchos will play their next five at home as well.
