Long UCO Streak Ends

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (March 22) – There was bound to be a game where Central Oklahoma struggled to get its powerful offense untracked and that came Friday morning in the opening contest of the Hy-Vee Classic.

The No. 2-ranked Bronchos – averaging 10.2 hits and 8.4 runs a game – managed just four hits against No. 17 Augustana and dropped a 4-0 decision at Griffon Stadium.

UCO had a 20-game winning streak snapped and suffered just its second loss of the season, falling to 24-2.  The Vikings improved to 18-4 with their 10th straight victory.

"Their pitcher (Ashley Mickashl) kept us off-balance and our hitters didn't do a very good job making adjustments," head coach Cody White said.  "They outplayed us and were better than we were today.  We won 20 straight, so we just need to keep positive about it and get back to the grind tomorrow."

Augie almost got on the scoreboard in the second inning after putting runners on second and third with two outs, but Hazel Puempel saved two runs with a diving catch in right field.

Central's best scoring chance came in the top of the fourth after Halley Randolph led off with a line-drive double to left field.  Pinch-runner McKenzie Carney went to third on JoBi Heath's fly out, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.

Augie broke the deadlock with two runs in the fourth and then added two insurance runs in the sixth to go up 4-0.  The Vikings had just six hits in the game, but five of those came in the two innings they scored.

The Bronchos return to action Saturday at 9 a.m. against No. 22 Winona State before finishing the two-day, three-game event at 1 p.m. against Northern State.
