Central Season Ends In NCAA Tournament Opener

MANKATOA, Minn. – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team lost 2-1 to Augustana Friday afternoon in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

UCO's season comes to an end with the loss. The Bronchos finished the season 14-5-3.

"It's disappointing to lose this way and this be the way our season ends," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said after the game. "We played well today, and we got a lot of chances. We were so close, but in the end, we didn't put those chances away. It stings."

Central outshot Augustana 23-11 on the day, and had an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. But the Bronchos only converted one chance and Augustana, though only putting three shots on target, converted two of them.

Augustana took a first-half lead with a 38th-minute goal. Kenzie Geiger's cross was deflected into the goal between UCO goalkeeper Kaitlyn Asher and defender Kelsey Gordon.

The Bronchos had multiple close chances to take an early lead before that goal, and even equalize after it, but couldn't put it through. Central outshot Auggie 8-7 in the first half.

After the restart, UCO continued to press. The Bronchos finally cracked through in the 71st minute.

Brooke Moore corralled the ball about 30 yards out on the right side of the field and crossed it into the box toward the back post. Haley Post was there to put home the score and tie the game, 1-1.

Central had a few late chances to go ahead, but again were missing by the smallest of margins.

Then in the 84th, Augustana got an open look at a goal after a hectic back and forth in front of the Broncho goal. The goal sealed the deal for the Vikings and ultimately, ended the Central season.

Asha Haile took a team-high seven shots Friday. Kelsie Eason took five herself, as did Post. Asher played all 90 minutes in goal and made one save.
