Bronchos Beaten For First Time In 2019

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma lost for the first time this season Friday night, falling 2-1 to Fort Hays State in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Tom Thompson Field.

The Bronchos, ranked 14th in the country, are now 6-1-2 on the season. UCO is 1-1 in league play.

"We just didn't come out ready to play tonight and that will get you every time," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "You can't expect to win when you play like we did tonight. We'll go back and straighten that out."

Central did outshoot Fort Hays State 24-5 on the night. But chance after chance fell short. FHSU goalkeeper Megan Kneefel made eight saves on nine shots on goal for the Bronchos. Central put up 16 more shots that missed the target.

Friday's game had a peculiar start. The Bronchos played just 10 minutes before lightning in the area caused a delay. The teams went to their locker rooms for a 1-hour, 5-minute delay.

And just moments after the restart, FHSU capitalized.

A breakaway down the right side ended when Central defender Taryn Kedzior was called for a penalty for her tackle of a Tigers player inside the box. Hays put away the penalty and took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.

At halftime, Central still appeared to be in control. The Bronchos outshot FHSU 10-4 in the first half, but just couldn't find the back of the net.

In the second half, Hays struck again. The Tigers got a breakaway again, and again it was down the right side of the box, and this time Jenna Price slotted home the score to make it 2-0, Fort Hays State, after 54 mintues of play.

Central finally answered in the 65th minute. Kedzior did all she could to save a ball on the end line and flicked it back in front of the goal and just out of the reach of Kneefel. Eden Jones headed home an easy score right off the goal line to make it 2-1.

Central outshot Fort Hays 9-0 in the final 25 minutes, but again, couldn't find the back of the net.

UCO will turn the page quickly this weekend. The Bronchos host Nebraska Kearney Sunday at 1 p.m. as MIAA play rolls on.
