Central Crushes Northwest Missouri

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team put the petal to the metal Friday night in an 8-0 thrashing of Northwest Missouri in the cold and rainy conditions at Wantland Stadium.

UCO scored early and often in the win, and improved to 9-4-2 overall this season and 4-4 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

"We came out with a lot of energy and the girls weren't going to settle for anything less tonight," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We fought hard for the ball and worked hard for our chances and then when they came, we worked hard to put them away. We need to play just like this every single night."

UCO got on the scoreboard early Friday. Kelsey Gordon, a center back, took the ball from midfield to about 30 yards out before any Northwest defender made her pass it away. After giving it to Kelsie Eason there, she continued her run and got the ball back from Eason, and then put home her second goal of the season with ease and gave the Bronchos a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.

Asha Haile kept the pressure on Northwest in the early going. The senior settled with the ball about 25 yards out on the top left side of the 18-yard box. Rather than passing in and inching closer, Haile fired a shot herself and drained the ball in the upper 90 for the score to make it 2-0, UCO in the 12th minute.

Haile wasn't done.

Eason missed a shot in the 15th minute and it bounced off the NWMSU goalkeeper. Haile was there to pounce and punched home her second goal of the game.

Eason then didn't miss on her next chance and made it 4-0, UCO in the 22nd minute. Then in the 28th, Eason did miss again, hitting the post, but Haile was there again and put home her third goal of the game to give the Bronchos a 5-0 lead in the match.

UCO mass-subbed after that score and the rest of the first half played fairly even.

In the second half, the Bronchos returned to their pressing ways.

Haley Post found the back of the net in the 66th minute after a ball into the box got deflected around. Post tapped in her sixth goal of the season to make it 6-0, Bronchos.

Then just two minutes later, Haile sent in a corner kick that Eason headed home for a score to make it 7-0.

Karsen Killion earned her first goal of the season in the final moments. UCO took its 13th corner kick of the night in the 87th minute. Katie Gasaway sent a ball in on the ground and Killion flicked it up. A NWMSU defender made a desperate attempt to head it away as it crossed the goal line. That score made it the final, 8-0.

UCO outshot Northwest 24-4 on the night. The Bearcats took only one shot on goal and that came in the 90th minute of play. Kaitlyn Asher made a brilliant save off the Northwest free kick right before time expired.

Central Oklahoma put half of its 24 shots on goal. Eason took a game-high seven shots and had two on target – her two goals.

Haile took just three shots on the night and scored three goals. It's her second career hat trick. The first came in this year's season-opener. With her first goal on the night, Haile became the sixth player in school history to reach 100 career points. After Friday night, the Norman, Okla. native has 45 career goals, 16 career assists, and 106 career points. Those marks rank fourth, 11th, and fith respectively, on Central's all-time lists.

Central Oklahoma will remain home for the weekend. The Bronchos take on Missouri Western Sunday at 1 p.m. Before the match, UCO will honor four seniors in a brief ceremony. Gordon, Haile, Post, and Madison Motil will all play their final regular season home match.
