Central's Blitzing Second Half Crumbles Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team beat Missouri Southern 5-3 Friday night in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Hughes Stadium.

Central Oklahoma improved to 8-1-2 overall in 2019 and now has a 3-1 record in league play. The Bronchos, ranked 24th in the country in the latest United Soccer Coaches national rankings, will now play at fifth-ranked Central Missouri Sunday at 1 p.m.

UCO found itself tied with 2-8 Missouri Southern at halftime. Despite 11 first-half shots, the Bronchos couldn't find the back of the net and only put two shots on goal. After 45 minutes, the teams went to the locker room in a scoreless tie.

However, Central Oklahoma used a dominating blitzing attack in the second half and went ahead 5-0 within 20 minutes of returning to the field of play.

Sophie Hunter, a true freshman, found open space on the left side of the box and took a pass from Haley Post. She gathered and fired and scored her first career goal to put the Bronchos on the scoreboard, 1-0, in the 51st minute.

In the 57th minute, Post found sophomore Katy Tullis on the right side and she put home a shot to make it 2-0.

Then Post got in on the scoring affair herself. She took a pass from Asha Haile and put home an easy score to make it 3-0 in the 58th minute.

After a Missouri Southern foul in the 60th minute, Taryn Kedzior lined up a free kick from about 30 yards out just right of the center of the field. She pounded a shot not even a foot off the ground and slotted it home in the bottom right corner of the goal. That made it 4-0, UCO.

Eden Jones then chose the same spot on a penalty in the 64th minute and the Southern goalkeeper had no chance of stopping the freshman's punch-in and Central Oklahoma held a 5-0 lead in the match – just 19 minutes into the second half.

Central took 11 shots in both halves, but stepped up from just two shots on goal in the first half to putting nine on target in the second half.

Missouri Southern added a trio of goals late in the game.

Kaitlyn Asher played the first 70 minutes of the game in goal for the Bronchos. She made three saves and left the game with a 5-0 lead. Kelsi Gibson played the final 20 minutes and didn't make a save, allowing three goals.

Post, Jones, Tullis, and Haile, all took three shots Friday night to lead the charge for the Bronchos.

After 11 games played, Haile and Kelsie Eason continue to lead the team with nine goals each. Haile has a team-high seven assists. Post has five goals and six assists. The trio has accounted for 65 points this season.

Central Oklahoma and Central Missouri square off Sunday at 1 p.m. in Warrensburg. The game will be the NCAA Showcase Game of the Week. UCO beat UCM last season in Edmond during the regular season and in the MIAA Championship before the Jennies took the third meeting in the NCAA Tournament.
