Central Downed By Northwest Missouri

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma dropped a close 51-47 contest to Northwest Missouri in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association matchup at Hamilton Field House Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos dropped to 11-3 on the season with the loss and are now 2-2 in league play after their first home loss of the season. Northwest Missouri is 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA.

"We didn't take care of the ball very well at all today," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "We didn't shoot the ball very well either. But credit to Northwest Missouri. They knocked down the shots when they needed to."

UCO cut Northwest's lead to one point with 2:33 to play when Micayla Haynes scored a layup to make it 48-47. But that would be the last field goal of the game for the Bronchos.

Ireon Smith missed a 3-pointer on the next possession that would've put UCO up by two. Blake Blessington got the offensive rebound, but she also missed a put-back. She got her own rebound that time but the Bronchos turned the ball over still down one.

On the next possession, still down 48-47, Shatoya Bryson got a wide-open look at a 3-pointer but the junior guard missed and Northwest got the rebound. After the Bronchos fouled, the Bearcats made the first of two free-throws but rimmed out the second attempt and UCO would get one more chance to at least tie if not win the game in the final seconds.

But in what was a theme Saturday, Blessington threw a pass behind a cutting Bryson with six seconds left and the 21st turnover of the afternoon doomed Central. Northwest made both of its next two free-throws for the 51-47 win.

Haynes led UCO in scoring Saturday, putting in 15 points on 6-for-13 shooting. The junior guard also had four steals on the day as the Bronchos forced 19 turnovers. Smith had 12 points and added 10 rebounds. Both Haynes and Smith knocked down two 3-pointers as well.

Central Oklahoma had an early 14-9 lead in the game after the first 10 minutes of play. Haynes had five opening-quarter points, while Smith, Blessington, and Lauren Chancellor each had three.

Northwest Missouri went up 22-21 at halftime though with a strong second quarter, and led by three points, 41-38, after three quarters of play.

Blessington added six points – all on free-throws – for the Bronchos. McKenna Pulley scored four points off the Broncho bench, Chancellor finished with three, and Megan Hartness also had two points.

Bryson finished with three points, six rebounds, and two steals. Madison Lee had two points and three steals.

Central Oklahoma hits the road for a pair of MIAA games next weekend. The Bronchos play at Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday, Jan. 10 before visiting Fort Hays State on Saturday, Jan. 12. UCO returns home in two weeks to host Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern on Jan. 17 and 19 respectively.
