UCO Downed In Ada

ADA, Okla. - The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team lost its final non-conference game of the 2018-19 season Sunday afternoon, falling to East Central 75-56 at the Kerr Activities Center. The Bronchos are now 10-2 on the season.

"We just really didn't shoot the ball well at all today," UCO head basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "We didn't shoot the ball when we played these guys a month ago either. I knew they would be a tough game and they played really well today."

UCO shot just 25.5 percent from the floor Sunday, making 14 of 55 shots from the field. The Bronchos made 6 of 28 3-point attempts. UCO got a huge boost from its work to get to the free-throw line, making 22 of 27 attempts there.

Central Oklahoma found itself in an early hole thanks to a combined tough shooting performance on offense, and a solid shooting performance by East Central. The Bronchos hit only one 3-pointer on eight attempts in the opening quarter and shot 3-for-14 overall in the frame. ECU was 6 of 11 overall and hit three shots from behind the arc to build an 18-9 lead after the first 10 minutes.

UCO improved its shooting in the second quarter, up 17 percent with a 5-for-13 frame, but the Tigers of Ada kept it going with their performance on offense. ECU hit four 3-pointers in the second quarter, scoring 19 after an 18-point opening quarter to go to the locker room at halftime with a 37-25 lead.

Central nearly doubled its scoring output in the second quarter thanks to a 10-point quarter by Shatoya Bryson, who hit all three of her 3-point attempts. Bryson led all Broncho scorers in the first half with 12 points. Brooke Rayner's four bench points were the second most on the team.

Ireon Smith, who scored two points in her first reserve stint of the season, led the Bronchos with four first-half rebounds. ECU outrebounded the Bronchos 20-14 in the first 20 minutes.

The third quarter score was 19-16, just as the second quarter. UCO though shot a dismal 1-for-11 from the floor in the quarter, 9.1 percent. It earned 15 free-throws though and made 13 of them to keep the game decent.

East Central put up 19 points in a quarter for the third time in the fourth. ECU made at least three 3-pointers in every quarter, knocking down a game-high five in the final 10 minutes.

Bryson led the way for the Bronchos Sunday, scoring 15 points on 5 of 12 shooting including a 4-for-8 performance from behind the arc.

Micayla Haynes added 11 points despite an 0-for-5 day from the floor. Haynes not only made 11 free-throws, but the junior guard went 11-for-11 from the charity stripe, becoming the 12th player in school history to shoot 100 percent from the line in a game with at least 10 attempts.

Megan Hartness added eight points off the bench. Lauren Chancellor scored seven in her first career start. Smith added six off the bench, Rayner finished with five points, and Blake Blessington scored four.

Central Oklahoma will make its long-awaited return to Hamilton Field House next week. The Bronchos are back in conference play against Missouri Western on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 5:30 p.m. in what will be just the second home game of the season for UCO.
